The National Urban League has just issued its annual State of Black America report. It provides a troubling statistical snapshot of where blacks stand today in our country.
Like Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, I'm concerned. But after concern, we part company. We have very different ideas of what it is we should be concerned about.
Morial, I am sure, sees his organization as part of the solution. From what I see, it is a well-funded symptom of the problem.
Shouldn't it embarrass black Americans that one the nation's largest and most prestigious civil rights organizations offers a long list of proposals to improve black life in our country, and every single proposal is a government program?
Government funded jobs as the answer to unemployment, more government money in public schools, government health care, government business loans, government money for retirement accounts, government programs for counseling homebuyers, government worker training programs, government money for building construction, and on and on.
There's not a single proposal that I could find in a several hundred-page report about improving black life that does not start with government. The civil rights movement once was about freedom and liberation. Now it's about government dependency. We should be ashamed.
The report is crafted to disabuse any notion that since we now have a black president, our discrimination woes are "relics of the past." The proof: blacks are "twice as likely as whites to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six times as likely to be incarcerated."
But with all the statistics reported, methodically ignored is that blacks are little more than 12 percent of the population, yet we account for 50 percent of new AIDS cases,

I thought Barry fixed all those problems?
There is no “government money”
it is PEOPLE MONEY!!!!
And now it’s worth Monopoly money.
Sorry, but I no longer give a damn about the problems of “black America”. Anyone in this country that truly wants to have a good life can have one. Anyone who doesn’t can suffer in silence.
I pity the black person that wants to get ahead. Not only do they face the same challenges in life that the rest of us do, they have to escape the quicksand of a dysfunction, maladaptive tribal culture that threatens to continually drag them back down.
Shouldn’t it embarrass black Americans that one the nation’s largest and most prestigious civil rights organizations offers a long list of proposals to improve black life in our country, and every single proposal is a government program?
as long as the gov’t continues to provide as above there is no incentive for them or anyone else to do for themselves and make their lifes better. also todays young want to start at the top making the big dollars, they feel starting at the bottom as most of us did and working their way up to the top is beneath them. so they turn to drugs dealing and crime then end up in prison once caught and blame it on the white man.
I support term limits for all civil service employees. Sort of like reenlisting in the military.
In my entire life, in all the things I did wrong, badly, too late or generally fouled up...there has ALWAYS been one common denominator. In every case and in every scenario ... I WAS THERE!!!
I figured this out FINALLY, and I think that’s the day I grew up.

Sorry, but I no longer give a damn about the problems of black America.
I agree:
1) lose the hyphenated African-American tag
2) dismiss Black liberation theology as BS
3) emulate people like Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell rather than 50cent and ‘don’t snitch’ Carmelo Anthony
4) adopt self reliance rather than government dependence as a work ethic
5) abandon the ghetto ,it’s lingo and lifestyle
6) raise ones awareness that conservative, working white and black folk are ones allies and not enemies in the individual pursuit of happiness.
I applaud Star Parker for her conservative stand. That’s not easy when you’re surrounded by victims.
“Shouldn’t it embarrass black Americans that one the nation’s largest and most prestigious civil rights organizations offers a long list of proposals to improve black life in our country, and every single proposal is a government program?” It should not surprise anyone, since government nannying is all black people seem to understand and thus demand. Barry the affirmative action fraud is their chosen champion via their illicit ACORN plantings.
problem with the black community is that they are told from being young that the white person is to blame for them living in a doss hole.
They are told that the Govt should give them all the handouts they want.
My youngest is in Kindergarten and the two blacks kids in his class are rude, disrespectful, never listen, try to bully others but when my son stood up to them they went crying and one of them said it was because he was black.
Now the only place these little kids got this and their attitude is from their parents or should say parent.
I met one of the mothers and she shouldn’t even speak with a civil tone.
she is waving her arms around, saying comments like listen dog, what up with you dog etc etc.
It was pathetic and the two kids are going the same way.
I am past caring now, if they want to get ahead then good good for it and stop blaming others for their laziness.
I came here with hardly nothing in my pocket from England.
Came legally I might add and never wanted from the Govt but worked and worked over 90 hours some weeks plus we waited until we had money before we had kids unlike many around
12 years later I have 3 great A plus honor role kids, a house which is paid off, three cars which are all paid off and have no debt what so ever.
I do not have anything but a high school education and all I really knew was the military of which I joined at 16 straight from school,
years in the army and then years in the royal marine commando
I did it and so can they
couldn’t speak with a civil tone
Yeah, that's sad, but it's not my fault or responsibility.
......twice as likely as whites to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six times as likely to be incarcerated.....
All of which points to the fact that blacks tend to make very poor decisions.
We have a problem alright an amateur was not vetted before he attained the Presidency and now ALL of America must suffer.
Is the black community truly lost???
I don’t see any hope for them as long as you sit around waiting for Uncle Sam to wipe your nose
They say you don’t need to put a lid on a pot full of crabs.
As soon as it looks like one is going to crawl out the others pull him back down.
The ghetto is much like that. While you are off at work the guys sitting on the stoops hustling know you are gone and can send someone to steal the new TV you bought.
