Actor Ron Silver, who won a Tony Award as a take-no-prisoners Hollywood producer in David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow" and did a political about-face from loyal Democrat to Republican activist after the Sept. 11 attacks, died Sunday at the age of 62.

"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him early Sunday morning" in New York City, said Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which Silver helped found. "He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years."

Mitchell shows an appalling lack of respect for his brother.

Instead of being so obviously ashamed and apologetic for his dead brother’s political beliefs, he should be ashamed of himself for commenting about him in this manner, especially at this time.

Ron will be missed. He was the rarest of all creatures, a conservative actor. And a very brave man too. These two are usually mutually exclusive in Hollywood. RIP Ron.

Ditto that—always the good die young :(

RIP!!

He was a fine actor and dedicated speaker for the best for America. It took courage to speak out as he did and risk the wrath of Hollywood. Rest in peace and may the good Lord bless his family with strength and peace.

Sorry to hear of this loss.

I never really trusted Ron Silver from the time I heard him say, “Those are our planes now!” at the Clinton inaugural. Right then, I pegged him as an ignorant, greedy, selfish, disgusting Hollywood idiot. “Our planes now”........what a clueless moron he sounded like! It continues to be laughable (and scary) to think of a Democrat-run military!

Additionally, those highly skilled and professional military pilots flying those planes were not happy about Clinton's election! In fact, they hated him! Sure, they had to follow his orders, but most did not respect him at all. In fact, many chose to leave the service or retire asap with him at the helm. Those who had to stay in held their noses until Clinton was out.

When Ron changed his views after 9-11 I still did not quite trust him, for I believe he was merely frightened into realizing that the Republicans were the ones mature enough and capable enough to take care of business. I don't believe he had true conservative principles beyond that. In fact, I believe that if we had not had 9-11, Ron Silver would have said “Those are out planes now” at Obama’s election, too.

Sorry to criticize him on this time of his passing, but this is how I felt. At least he was able to change somewhat for the better after 9-11.

Very few celebrity passings actually make me sad, but this one does. He was far too young. A good guy, by all accounts. RIP. I am very sorry we lost him, and prayers up for his family.

It is so sad that a Republican celebrity’s death does not even merit a mention at all celebrity blogs, but they consider Lindsay Lohan and her fight with her lesbian lover a “breaking news”.

But we did have 911. Ron Silver himself said that 911 changed him in tremendous ways . He saw the light and was a great spokesman. May he rest in peace.

yes, kind of young I agree. My father was 62 when he passed away years ago (colon cancer not Ron’s). I was shocked too, never heard he was ill either.

RIP Ron Silver. My only guess is why his brother would comment like that would be to try and lessen leftist spewing on his memory. Won't work.

He had an excellent interview a few years ago. Talked about his beliefs and was worth the time. It got to the Q&A part and someone asked the question “why doesn't Hollywood made good movies anymore?” His response was that they don't have to. Silver explained that they no longer rely on US box office gross but instead concentrate on DVD and foreign sales. He said Hollywood can rake in millions by making anything and that's why the current crop of anti American movies sell at all.

Actor and longtime political activist Ron Silver died this morning, succumbing to a long battle with cancer, friends of the liberal Democrat-turned-GOP stalwart told The Post.
"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him this morning," said Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which Silver helped create. "He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years and his family is making arrangements for a private service."
Friends of Silver first told Post columnist Cindy Adams of the native New Yorker's death.
