FREEPER GARDENERS ----- BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH
VArious Threads | March 15, 2009 | Gabz

Posted on 03/15/2009 3:50:04 PM PDT by Gabz

Good Evening Good FRiends and Good Gardeners.

The FReeper Gardening list got a huge workout this week, and I guess I should apologize for all the extra pings that probably often didn’t seem to have anything to do with why we originally started our list. Unfortunately it seems it has been taken out of my hands because the politics of our times has now invaded our gardens and farms.

I didn’t start out to create a new thread, in fact this actually started out as an email to a friend from Church. We had gotten talking after service and he was not fully aware of some of the things we had all discussed this week and I told him I would send some links. The links I was planning on sending him were to two articles we had all discussed here this week, however when I got back here this afternoon I realized there were far more than just the 2 and while starting to compile my email, I thought it might not be a bad idea to stick all of the links I was sending him into one thread.

Please all bear with me, as the order these links are the order was I sending him based upon our conversation this morning and not how we discussed them this week. Heck, who knows, he may enjoy our banter enough when he reads through some of our links and actually decide to join us. I sure hope, so as he is a very knowledgeable gentleman.

.

Also folks, please bear with me on my HTML skills (which are minimal) as I wrote this in a Word document based on my FR HTML usage 

The First is to the transcript thread of the weekly address in which 0bama announces his new food police:

Weekly Address: Reversing a Troubling Trend in Food Safety (w/transcript of Pres__ent's Address)

Next is an article from the BBC in which it explains that 0bama is calling our food sytem a public health hazard:

Obama warns of US food 'hazard'

The 3rd link is a VERY long, but well detailed description of much of HR 875, the Food Safety Act, and just what it will mean to even most of us who are just backyard gardeners, let alone the small family farmers among us.

More Freedom Attack, Food Safety Act

Next on the list is a tie-in piece of “legislation” known as NAIS, which has ben being discussed here on FR for a good long time. This is another lengthy, but informative, article.

Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance (Gubmint Counting Your Chickens--Literally! Alert!)

I added the next one in my list to my friend because we like our potlucks and our semi-annual Pancake suppers, which are a fundraiser for the Church.

(PA) Dept. of Agriculture stops fish fry pie sales

This final thread from this afternoon is just an example of the “too numerous to count” articles that we have all been seeing lately about how many more folks are either planting gardens for the first time or expanding the ones they have. The cited article is from Salon and AP, so even though I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, I can just imagine how fun it is going to be!!!

< a href =” http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2207096/posts”> Dollars from dirt: Economy spurs home garden boom (It's official: We're now peasants!!)

I am now going to attempt to post this. I’m posting in CHAT because all of these threads have already appeared in NEWS.

Rural property and you have all that red tape to go through? WOW...You might want to consider moving to Tennessee! ;-)

We are also in a rural area and we plan to get pretty serious with gardening. Home grown simply tastes so much better and has to have a higher vitamin content. Husband has a great compost pile going. ;-)

The way this administration is making a ton of imprudent (understatement) decisions, we may eventually need what we grow a great deal more.

Just to let y’all know I’m not ignoring this IMPORTANT issue..because it’s pretty much MY livelihood...

I’m reading through the bills now. They’re fresh, and we have plenty of time for write-ups on the truth of the matter. Don’t expect me to go easy on any faction that’s lying. ;-)

Here are some examples of the language that I’ll be looking for.

From the Senate version:

“`(b) Description of System- The traceability system required by subsection (a) shall require each article of food shipped in interstate commerce to be identified...”

[Regards “adulteration,” “misbranding,” etc.]

“`(1) IN GENERAL- A person (other than a household consumer)... “

So keep it clean, or else.

Hey guys!

Appreciate the pings, y’all, even if I haven’t had time to answer.

Got you beat on the 60 hour weeks, Di! Spring is always crazy, but this year is insane already. If I make it til June without killing someone it will be a miracle!

The weather is crazy too. Last week we had days that didn’t get out of the 20’s then it went to 70’s and 80’s, now it’s back to 40’s and 50’s. We are transplanting as hard as we can, the green house is full to bursting, and it’s not going to be enough. We’ve got to evict the cold stuff that’s left and shuffle the warm season stuff and somehow make more room so we can transplant some more.

Hubby got our broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage and some pak choi, along with about a 100 vidalia’s and a row of May peas and one of Sugar Snaps planted. FIL planted 50# of potatoes so we’re not going to plant any.

Got my chicks ordered, should be in around the end of the month. Got 25 Buff Orpingtons instead of Rhode Island Reds. The guys took over my coop for a coolers/nets/ boat junk shed so I guess they’ll be building me a new one.

I’ll be in and out, mostly out, for the next couple of months. Right now, after work, the only thing I’m perfecting is my couch potato skills. :)

Take care, y’all, and happy gardening!

“I showed my First Wife”

Lol, I know someone who used to introduce his children as being “from his first marriage”, which was true as he was married to their mom.
