Apple's Safari will fall first at hacker contest, past winner predicts
Computer World ^ | March 3rd | Gregg Keizer

Apple Inc.'s Safari is the juiciest target in the upcoming PWN2OWN hacking contest, last year's winner predicted today.

"It's an easy target," said Charlie Miller, the vulnerability researcher who last year walked off with a $10,000 cash prize for breaking into an Apple laptop just a few minutes into the contest. PWNOWN is slated for its third appearance at the CanSecWest security conference later this month in Vancouver, British Columbia.

"It might be because I'm biased about the things I'm good at, but it's the easiest browser [to hack]," Miller said.

PWN2OWN's sponsor, 3Com Inc.'s TippingPoint unit, will pay $5,000 for each new bug successfully exploited in Safari, Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox or Google Inc.'s Chrome. IE8, Firefox and Chrome will be running on a Sony notebook powered by Windows 7, Microsoft's still-under-construction operating system, while Safari and Firefox will be available on a MacBook.

"Apple's products are really friendly to users, and Safari is designed to handle anything, including all kinds of file formats," said Miller. "With a lot of functionality comes the increased chance of bugs. The more complex software is, the less secure it is."

Waiting for the Apple disciples to come out on the offensive in the wake of this blasphemous article.

“Waiting for the Apple disciples to come out on the offensive in the wake of this blasphemous article.”

They(extreme Apple fans)are indeed vicious. You should have seen what they said about that Guy from Palm for having the nerve to say that iPhone users might chose a Pre over getting a new iPhone.

You would have though he called their mom a whore by how far they flew off the handle.

Grab some popcorn, cause they are gonna let it rip here too.

Some of them are. But not all.

You have cult Microsofties, and you have cult OSS users too.

One thing is pretty clear however; The department that does the best work over at Apple is it’s marketing department.

Without that, they’d be lost. Sure, a lot of their products are good, but most don’t justify the prices apple charges.

Sorry, I have to disagree. Apple's marketing department is the media. They will marvel over anything produced like it is revolutionary even though multiple other products exist that offer more capabilities.

Not to defend Apple, but it doesn’t seem right that the Microsoft browser is IE8 and not IE7. IE8 is in beta and is not scheduled for public release for two weeks or so.

LOLOL, yes yes, the liberal media do love Apple, don’t they?

Not only is Apple “the little guy”, but Steve Jobs is a hard core leftist.

But marvel at it’s devices or not, the Apple marketing team is the one steering that ship. From their ad campaigns to their flower power imacs.

Exploits on a Mac require user permission, browser aside. There’s no “hack” that will commandeer a Mac without it. Are there plenty of naive Mac users, who will elect to allow it? Sure. I think there’s a little “marketing” going on with this prize, though, to imply that their “hack” is the equivalent of what is possible on any PC running a Windows variant.

Steve Jobs is a hard core leftist.

So, where does Bill Gates fall on the political spectrum?

Many Apple users are a bit taken. Reminds one of Prius drivers doesn't it?
