CalTech grad student named Virgil Griffith has conducted an interesting (albeit somewhat unscientific) study relating music preferences with SAT scores. While SAT scores are criticized for not accurately determining intelligence, the results show that the “smartest” students’ favorite musician is Beethoven, with an average SAT score of 1371, and at the other end of the spectrum is Lil’ Wayne, with an average score of 889.

Other bands at the top of the scale are Counting Crows, Radiohead, and Sufjan Stevens. Check out the full image of the results after the jump:

Surprisingly, no style of music stands out above the rest, but rather most bands fit within the 1000 to 1150 score range. Another question is whether music can be legitimately associated with smarts.

Does intelligence choose the band? Or does music define how smart we become? Where do your favorite bands appear? Do you think that music can make you dumb?

Totally negates the entire thing, IMO.

To understand Tull, you must have a incredible working knowledge of English history and folklore.

To listen to BOC, you must understand the abundant references to high ritual magic [courtesy of the ever-odd Sandy Perlman], science fiction [Michael Moorcock], HP Lovecraft, general 'collective subconscious' mythopoeia and world history.

I'm surprised The Butthole Surfers isn't on the list, considering.

Even Type O Negative forces you to consider the implications of their word play and entendres.

Even though The Doors are on there, I'd bet the stoners are listening but not comprehending.

Got a bloody nose in the mosh pit at a Butthole Surfers concert once. Good thing I was drunk, it would've hurt. Don't do that sort of thing anymore, but it was fun at the time. Can't say I actually liked the band, white lab coats and yelling into bullhorns was novel at the time, I guess.

My kid is statistical outlier- likes and plays Jazz, classic rock (1969-1987, loves Clapton, U2 and Police), but also likes to perform Mahler, Grainger and more obscure symphonic composers. Yet he scored a 1520 (800 & 720) with almost no prep— sort of an idiot genius I guess.
