The White House press office announced today that Vivek Kundra, the current chief technology officer of Washington DC, will be assuming the position of Federal Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the White House.
The appointment of a top CIO is another first: the position did not exist in any previous administrations. Kundra will also have final say on government technology purchases , and will have the authority to overrule his peers at subordinate agencies.

“which is exactly why security clearances that include background investigations are done on them.”
On both native and non native citizens, nobody here is saying that should not be done
“There are many flags that, rightfully, are cause for additional investigation, such as being born in a foreign country”
That’s never been a flag in and of itself. Hell Kissinger was a German.
“So our government is racist for requiring additional background investigation during security clearances of those born in a foreign country”
nothing to do with our government... *YOU* look like a racist for screaming ‘how dare he appoint a foreigner’ before his background check has even been done! and the fact you do it here puts a small stink on this whole community.
“You think we should do away with those requirements completely, and we’re racist for flagging them as different than naturally born citizens?”
You dont think natural born citizens should have a background check done?
He's not a developer, he's a policy maker, and his policies are open source oriented. Do you really not understand the implication?
Absolutely hilarious considering that's coming from the creator of the "Jim Rome Ping List" here at FR! Thankfully it's been defunct while you were recovering from your football team's latest loss in the NC title game, but now that you're back it's probably high on your list. Lots of serious adult talk going on there huh.
From the very first link I gave you titled “The First U.S. CIO, Vivek Kundra: Bodes Well for Open Source”:
The Apps for Democracy initiative is probably the most telling example of Kundra’s friendliness toward open source. The Washington, D.C. program included cash prizes for citizens who created open source mashup applications of use to the government...Matt Asay notes that Vivek is probably very good news for open source, and I agree, especially given the Obama administration’s existing interest in open source.
Still in Denial?
Thank you
VP Joe Biden was surprised at the Fed CIO pick, saying, “The President went with Kundra? Is he going to be able to get enough time off from his 7-Eleven job?”
"Full security checks" are different if you're from another country, which I advised you of since you didn't seem to be aware of it. Based on your comments you've indicated you don't think that is fair - that national origin should not ever play a role in determining one's qualification. If that is not your position you should clear it up, you're welcome to have a dissenting opinion but that is the law, as national origin is a legitimate concern when determining someone's fitness for a high level government position. And it's not racist in doing so, in my opinion, it's smart, and there for a reason.
Get a load of this, Obama’s second choice was from India as well!
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/jan2009/tc20090115_815265.htm
President-elect Obama has two executives in mind for the top technology job, one from Cisco and one from Washington, D.C. Both were born in India.
Kundra will have budgetary authority to launch entirely new systems within government departments, or kill existing multimillion-dollar IT projects. His decisions could have a large impact on government contractors, such as SAIC and Booz Allen Hamilton, that have come to provide the bulk of IT services to agencies.

Because private business that compete through contracts could provide better service, at lower cost, than federal workers, of course. You're exactly right this new CIO will try to grow the federal workforce instead, Obama already announced it for the IRS:
IRS dumps private debt collectors, shifts pendulum
WASHINGTON (AP) -- So much for privatizing the federal government. The Internal Revenue Service's decision this week to quit using debt collectors to dun delinquent taxpayers was celebrated by public employee unions as a pendulum shift after watching the Bush administration often opt for private contractors over federal workers to deliver government services.
Great, maybe N3WBI3 is finally coming to his senses. Might even happen to you one day, but the odds are longer.
You didn’t do anything to dispel the fact the Jim Rome Ping List is the highlight of your contributions to this site, in fact you once again reinforced it. You also made it clear you’re more than willing to support whatever Obama wants so long as it somehow satisfies your hate of Microsoft, congratulations on that as well.
Well great, I'm glad to hear it, but would have never never possibly guessed such a thing based on the amazingly childish behavior you continually display on the tech threads. If you want to be treated like an adult you should start acting like one, starting with addressing the subject of this thread instead of going off on your typical attacks against me as if I'm the one supporting Obama's selection as CIO, when it's apparently the other way around. And before you ignore what I just said and immediately go into another one of your tirades against Microsoft, you might want to consider every post I've made to this thread has been done from an Apple Mac, whether you're capable of ever dealing with actual facts, or not.
