Brazil Church Excommunicates Mom, Doctors After Raped 9-Year-Old Has Abortion

RIO DE JANEIRO — A Roman Catholic archbishop says the abortion of twins carried by a 9-year-old girl who allegedly was raped by her stepfather means excommunication for the girl's mother and her doctors.

Despite the nature of the case, the church had to hold its line against abortion, Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho said in an interview aired Thursday by Globo television.

"The law of God is higher than any human laws," he said. "When a human law — that is, a law enacted by human legislators — is against the law of God, that law has no value. The adults who approved, who carried out this abortion have incurred excommunication."

So the church’s position is that the babies’ lives are sacrosanct but the little girl’s life isn’t? That the moral thing to do is stand around with your thumb up your ass because it is a difficult decision? How cowardly!

No point, I just like showing that similar end results are many times dependent upon the situation...plus, it really seems to bug you.

The only medical reason for performing the abortion given by the doctors, according to other news sites, was the girl’s slender build. No where was any diagnosis of possible uterine rupture given. So I am inclined to think they had to find a “life threatening” reason to justify the abortion. There is no proof that waiting then delivering the babies by C section was not a valid medical option.

Yes a nine year old being pregnant (especially from rape) is awful but even if vaginal delivery was not an option that does not mean her life was necessarily in danger. I have seen a lot of very tiny woman who have had children safely. Smaller stature is not unusual in Hispanics.

And if the uterus was truly in danger of rupturing and the doctor’s took measures to save the life of the mother and the twins did not survive I believe it would be comparable to when a doctor has to remove an ectopic pregnancy. In these cases the loss of the baby is not a result of a direct abortion.

What did the bishop have to say about the rapist?

You have no idea that her uterus was ready to rupture. That is almost an impossible thing to happen, she would go into pre term labor. There is no way that anyone can make such a statement by the size of someone.

I was a size “0” when I got pregnant with twins. I had no problems carrying them. Unfortunately, I did lose one at delivery due to a knot in the cord, but not becuase of my size.

My grandmother was 4’ 10” and 78 lbs. She gave birth to healthy twin girls.

If this girl was going through puberty and had her period.
I am sure she was much more developed than your average age 9 year old.

If it was a baby or mother situation I am willing to accept that but the # of abortions for them or us reasons is next to zero..

BTW the church has definitions for a ‘just’ war... I would be interested in your postulations for a ‘just’ abortion..

If I need to clarify, I’m always willing!

The children are louder, but the catz are more threatening. “Quark!” as Wednesday sniffs my ankle. “Meep-peep-peep!” Shannon sneaks behind to cut off my retreat. “Nyarrrrr,” Wednesday firmly places a paw full of claws on my knee ... “Bill, bring the cat food right away!”

That’s what I want to know. I was thinking, “My goodness! What are they feeding these kids that they can start menstruating at 8?” Then someobody posted that she weighs 80 lbs.. I have no idea what is going on. At 80 lbs., how does one get pregnant - even at 19 or 29?

It takes at least 14% body fat to begin to menstruate, 17% to be able to nurture a pregnancy. There might be multiple factors that bring on puberty, but body fat is cardinal among them.

spoken like a true zealot. You said .”the child is also innocent, but so what”... seem like you don't care about the child as much as the unborn. I have always thought that even the Catholic Church makes exceptions for “life of the mother”. If not, then they do believe a potential catholic is better and an already born here catholic. Although I am pro-life in 99.9% of the time, this is one of the 1/10 of 1% I believe the doctor and mother did the right thing.

Perhaps if you didn’t start out responding in such a negative, almost attacking manner, you would understand.
