dintionaries ad nauseum, internet | 5 March 2009 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

temerity \tuh-MER-uh-tee\, noun
Unreasonable or foolhardy contempt of danger; rashness.

Example sentences:

The elaborate caution with which the British commander now proceeded stands out in striking contrast with the temerity of his advance upon Bunker Hill in the preceding year.
-- John Fiske, "Washington's Great Campaign of 1776", The Atlantic, January 1889

When English merchants had the temerity to set up a trading post or 'factory' -- junior merchants were known as factors -- the Dutchmen defended their monopoly by massacring them.
-- Anthony Read and David Fisher, The Proudest Day

Drivers with the temerity to accelerate out of turns are likely to encounter torque steer, an unsettling glitch in control as the engine fights to take charge of the steering.
-- Peter Passell, "Mitsubishi Diamante: Back From Down Under", New York Times, February 23, 1997

Throughout the anti-trust trial its executives treated the courts and the US government with sneering contempt, coupled with a ratty annoyance that any public authority should have the temerity to interfere in its business.
-- John Naughton, "Gates must not win at monopoly", The Observer, October 28, 2001

Etymology:
Temerity comes from Latin temeritas, from temere, blindly, rashly.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Yeah, but we get to enjoy a fine fish sandwich and a sense of community every once in a while.

You’re in Cleveland, right? You got to have some good fish sandwiches there. Here on assignemnt in Houston they can’t do crap for a real fish sandwich.

Cleveland?

No.

I’m midway between Baltimore and Annapolis. I described it recently as being like the extra condiment in a double helping of a crap sandwich.

On the other hand, I can get a decent fish sandwich right out at the end of my street. Thanks for reminding me.

TANJ! All the really good coupons have expiration dates.

Sorry, had you confused with the Cleveland guy.

I have two sisters who had to flee this area to find jobs in the DC area after college.

Yes, having a decent fish sandwich is a perk of life with a certain critical mass of Catholics.

Though the “lunch stand” at the plant in Houston where I’m working has fish sandwiches for sale, they were “out” last week. Like it never occurred to them to order more during Lent.

Back home, even Arby’s (Roast Beef pusher) advertises fish for Friday.

Yeah, but I said “decent.”

You should know better. I mean the place where some cod fillets are brought in frozen, the cooks hand bread them, then they are fried as the day goes on. This is basically every local tavern in W. PA.

I praise the Italians for their temerity:

ROTFLMAO....I hate all kinds of fish....even that served in fine restaurants........seven days during Lent that I have to eat fish.....it’s torture. We had egg salad last Friday...and tomato soup for lunch.

There is absolutely no requirement that any Catholic consume fish or any seafood product. It’s just a small-t tradition.

Plain spaghetti, eggs, plain pizza, etc. are all acceptable.

But seriously, you guys don’t have anywhere that has really good fish? As opposed to the fire hall or church that has obligatory fish.

we have some local mom and pop places that do an excellent job.....I just don’t like it....we are having cheese ravioli this week...and for lunch I bought cottage cheese for me...a couple of times we might go to a local fish fry...other that that we find things to eat.....a plain pizza or something.

Ravioli are another good one. Kind of like we stuff ourselves on pierogie cause 4 of them with their potato and cheese will fill you up on a fast day.

Fridays outside of Lent are not “meatless” days. Every one knows that. But Canon law still obliges everyone to make a sacrifice.

If you like fish and hate beef, then the “traditional” act is no sacrifice. I like meat, so outside of Easter season like to still abstain from meat.

I go to Bible study in the next diocese...you should have seen my jaw drop when Sr. Brigid tells us that you can only have ONE meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.....they tell us over here in my diocese two small meals and one larger meal.....man did I go hungry that day.

I have lost a little weight so far this Lent...thanks to Sister.
