Just got this from Gun Owners of America. If you are not a member and you are interested in protecting your 2nd Amendment rights then you should give them a look.

==================================================================================================================

Senate Repeals D.C. Gun Ban by Large Vote -- But the fight in the House is just beginning

Monday, March 2, 2009

By a resounding vote of 62 to 36 last week, the U.S. Senate has approved an amendment, offered by Senator John Ensign of Nevada, to repeal the D.C. gun ban.

Congratulations!

But the battle is not over.

This week, the House will take up the D.C. voting legislation. And anti-gun Speaker Nancy Pelosi is angling to impose a "gag rule" on the House, so that D.C. gets its unconstitutional representative, while continuing its draconian anti-gun laws (like microstamping).

So here's the deal: The House will be asked to consider a "rule" which establishes the time for debate and provides for which amendments may be considered -- and which may not.

It is expected that the Pelosi rule will seek to deny the House any vote on the D.C. gun ban and thereby strip the repeal of the ban from the House bill.

So what we are asking you to do is to write and/or call your congressman and demand that he oppose any rule that strips the D.C. gun ban repeal from the D.C. voting bill.

Just to remind you of how draconian the D.C. gun law is:

* Following the Supreme Court's decision in Heller declaring the law to be unconstitutional, D.C. made a few cosmetic changes which will, as a practical matter, allow it to continue to deny its citizens the right to keep and bear arms.

* Then, the City Council passed a whole series of new anti-gun measures. These include a requirement that most guns used for self-defense "microstamp" fired casings in two places with a "unique serial number."

Aside from being ineffectual with respect to stolen guns or crimes where the brass has not been left behind, this microstamping provision is intended to make guns so expensive that they won't be available anywhere -- including your state.

ACTION: Write your Representative and urge him or her in the strongest terms to oppose any rule which will strip the gun ban repeal from the D.C. voting bill.

You can use the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center to send your Representative the pre-written e-mail message below.

You can also call him or her toll-free at 1-877-762-8762.

----- Prewritten Letter -----

Dear Representative:

This week, when the House takes up the D.C. voting legislation, please vote against any rule that strips the Senate's pro-gun language and/or imposes a "gag rule" on members of the House.

Just to remind you of how virulently anti-gun the D.C. gun law is: Following the Supreme Court's decision in Heller declaring the law to be unconstitutional, D.C. made a few cosmetic changes which will, as a practical matter, allow it to continue to deny its citizens the right to keep and bear arms.

But, in addition, the City Council passed a whole series of new anti-gun measures. These include a requirement that most guns used for self-defense "microstamp" fired casings in two places with a "unique serial number."

Aside from being ineffectual with respect to stolen guns or crimes where the brass has not been left behind, this microstamping provision is intended to make guns so expensive that they won't be available anywhere -- including my state.

I urge you, in the strongest terms, to oppose any rule that makes it impossible for you to vote on the D.C. gun ban repeal.

Sincerely,

Okay, the ban is repealed, so....what? Can I carry a pistol wherever I wish? I have no idea what this means.

It passed the Senate but not the House and Obama hasn't signed it, so for now nothing has changed.

If you are a member of GoA kindly let me know if GoA allows LT membership on the installment plan? I see on their web site that a "down payment" is permitted but couldn't find any info what happens after one makes a down payment.

The reason I ask is that I'm currently spending on some new pieces and hunting down ammo for what I already own. While joining GoA is important to me and fighting anti-gun efforts stockpiling and acquisition of new pieces has a higher priority for me at the moment. If anyone knows the answer to my question please chime in and hopefully provide a link to where I can see the info for myself. Otherwise membership will just have to wait a while longer.

These things are so confusing anymore.

There was an amendment/bill last week that did the same thing, but also gave DC a voting member of congress. Not sure if this is the same one or not. If so it’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t bill. Either way you vote you rip another strip off the Constitution.

The only correct action for the GOP is voting Present.

As a member of NRA, does anybody think it would be worth it to join the GOA? Should I join both or drop NRA for GOA, or sit tight in the NRA? Money is tight right now, but I got upset during the Clinton years with the NRA sort of going mushy under duress. I just want to do the most good.

GOA has never had any influence, and never will. Their main goal is raising funds from disgruntled NRA members. Stick with the NRA. They aren’t anywhere near perfect, but they’re the only gun-rights group with any real clout.

“We’re going to have to take one step at a time, and the
first step is necessarily — given the political realities
— going to be very modest ...
So then we’ll have to start working again to strengthen
the law, and then again to strengthen the next law, and
maybe again and again.
Right now, though, we’d be satisfied not with half a loaf
but with a slice.
Our ultimate goal — total control of handguns in the
United States — is going to take time .

The first problem is to slow down the increasing number
of guns being produced and sold in this country.
The second problem is to get handguns registered.
And the final problem is to make the possession of *all*
handguns and *all* handgun ammunition — except for the
military, policemen, licensed security guards, licensed
sporting clubs, and licensed gun collectors — totally
illegal.”

Ron, yes I am a member of GOA. I am not sure about the payment options on the LT membership but I have called them before with other questions and they are extremely helpful and very nice. Just go to their site and click on “contact” info and give them a call. And while their membership is not quite as large as the NRA’s (of which I am also a member) they send me “Legislative Alerts” more frequently than the NRA. Also, what some of us do not realize, is that most of these membership numbers are looked at individually. In essence, what I mean is that I am being counted twice by being in 2 different organizations. There has also been talk about all the “organizations” banding together to make one LARGE number if things get really hot. Thanks for your interest.

Yes on the installments. Make the down payment. They send an invoice every quarter for $50.00. You can pay that online by clicking the “Join” button (I think). Just reference the invoice.

I’m still waiting for anyone to tell me what the goa has ever done on their own. If anyone doesn’t like the NRA, then they should join the Second Amendment Foundation which has a better track record because they work with the NRA at times.

Thanks. That's the answer I was looking for. I want to put down a c-note and maybe $50+ a month depending on available cash after usual expenses.

As for as the NRA is concerned I'll have to think about joining them for a good bit. I'm still very unhappy with some of their past decisions, actions and alliances.
