Singer Phil Collins said his life now revolves around the Alamo.
Collins is in town, set to appear at local events commemorating the anniversary of the siege and battle of the Alamo. Though he's mulling the idea of recording a tribute cover album of 1960s songs, he said he's making the Alamo “my main thing” as a collector, history buff and possible author.
“Basically, now I've stopped being Phil Collins the singer. This has become what I do,” he said Monday, standing beside a 13-foot-by-15-foot model of the 1836 Alamo compound that will open to the public this week.
Collins, who is British, said he has “hundreds” of cannonballs, documents and other artifacts from the Alamo, possibly the largest private collection anywhere, in the basement of his home in Switzerland. He said he's collaborating with artist Gary Zaboly on a book about his collection.
His most prized item is a receipt signed by Alamo commander William Barret Travis for 32 head of cattle used to feed the Alamo defenders.
His latest involvement in Alamo history is narrating the introduction of a 13-minute “Alamo diorama light and sound show” at the History Shop at 713 E. Houston St., by the Alamo. Invited guests at a preview tonight will also see a battle site excavation covered with a window on the floor of the shop, which is near the Alamo's north wall, where much of the heaviest fighting occurred.
It is great that he has taken on something for the good of history and a cause greater than himself instead of heading into a personal downward spiral as so many musicians and actors do.
In the mid 1950’s the Davy Crockett character was all the rage with kids due to the program on TV with Fess Parker. Every young boy had a coon skin hat and toy fortress with the soldiers and characters, etc. The Alamo history was brought to life when John Wayne made the movie.
I am so glad to learn that Mr. Collins is doing what he can to preserve this big part of American history.

...and lots of “original Texans”...Mexicans who lived here, and were just as proud of Texas independence.
It is really cool to meet Texans who are of Mexican decent, but their families have been here for over 150 years. Even cooler when they have their Texas drawls.

My ancestors didn’t fight at the Alamo. Sam Houston had an agreement with them to protect their backsides from the Mexicans coming through their settlement. They were Cherokee.....with southern drawls.

First, the title should read “Has-been Phil Collins has officially gone crazy.”
Second, I will say if you are going to go crazy and become obsessed with something, the Alamo is a good choice.

Is San Antonio good for conservatives? I know Austin and probably Houston are out. A bunch of us want to pack up and get out of state (all NRA members, BTW), so if you can offer any suggestions, I’d appreciate it.

When I lived overseas foreigners always asked other foreigners where they were from. Those of us from the US but not Texas would always answer, “the US.” Texans would always answer, “Texas.”

Never cared for him as a singer, but he has always seemed like a nice guy.
San Antonio has lots of retired military and they tend to be conservative. San Antonio is too humid and hot for me in the Summer. I like the arid dry part of Texas, but I grew up there. And I spent 14 years in NM, hot & dry (and in the mountains).
There are only a few counties in Texas that are liberal tainted. Austin is one of those areas.
My daughter and son-in-law live in Williamson County, just outside Austin. Very conservative area.
General rule, Cities are Liberal, Rural Areas are Conservative.
The Mexican border influence is a consideration now. It is not a racial issue, but corruption issue. Proximity to the border increases potential problems with violence.
So Santa Anna was the imperialist taking Aztlan from the Texians? That is still stoopid.
