Virus/Bug that causes laughter over your speakers?
Posted on 02/27/2009 8:42:37 PM PST by KJC1
Is anyone here familiar with this?
The laughter sound is like a "Mwhahaha" in a deep, devilish voice.

Play something like Johnny Cash's “The Gospel Road” over and over until it disappears. (Shouldn't take more than the first play to do the job.)

Hey KJ!
You are not crazy! I have had that happen too, in the past. I had to change my filters on IE and aol. It was a cookie that kept playing the background once in a while.
I haven't had in since I got my new laptop in Nov.
If you are still using AOL, I think changing it on IE will do it. Clear the cache and delete the cookies.
If it comes back, keep a list of the sites you are visiting. Also, use spybot and malewarebyte. They are free :)

Might be a setting on your buddy list. The icons on AIM have sound effects.

Actually, may I offer this as advice...
Do you have kids? Could one (or more) of your offspring have AIM accounts? Do the lil darling(s) leave AIM open??? Some on their buddie lists (one of the 14,000 or so internet pals the average computer savvy kiddo has) may use the 'mahhhahahaha' as their 'alert/ping' sound.....soes, everytime one of the little dears gets a 'wassup' you get alerted.

At least you could pitch the pet rock into a lake or river if you were dumb enough to buy one.

It’s probably in your AIM settings... look for a laughing buddy icon. Turn off icons play sound...

You will not get any type of virus or bug by clicking on an FR link EVER (even I know that even with my question that started this thread, LOL).
It looks like my situation has been explained below, but it was weird to hear what I heard.

When my daughter was a college freshman her new laptop was equipped with voice recognition software, a fact of which she was unaware. She was sitting at her computer and talking to her roommate, when words started appearing on her computer screen. She was scared out of her mind! Based on what was being typed, she briefly thought her computer was possessed. She’s a great writer and wrote a funny account of her experience. I’ll have to go read it again for a good laugh.

I’ve had radio communications from passing police cruisers or firetrucks come over computer speakers before, on odd occasion.
Maybe somebody is playing a prank on you, nearby.
