Jindal and Palin

Posted on 02/25/2009 9:07:20 AM PST by jwb0581

I may be alone on this, but as a lifelong independent conservative I don't know how anyone can compare Palin to Jindal. Don't get me wrong - I love Palin as a person and I love her positions on the issues. But some of the interviews were just embarrasing. I dislike Gibson and Couric more than anyone, but at times she was non-sensical or just plain empty in her answers and that can't be blamed on anyone but Palin.

I have seen others have their conservatism questioned because they have reservations about Palin. Just because someone has conservative positions that I agree with, doesn't mean they are presidential material. My grandmother has great positions on the issues but she would not make a good president.

Jindal may come off as a geek, and maybe he's too young to run in 2012. But this guy is the most brilliant, capable conservative I've seen in years. I live in Louisiana so I have watched him up close. He is the real deal.

Palin wasn’t prepared for the unmerciful grilling she received - she was just the Vice-Presidential candidate. And yet, despite the efforts of the Dems to make her appear foolish, she DID give McNutjob a boost in the polls. McNutjob handled her very poorly. He didn’t use his best asset well.

The media correctly identified her as a real threat as she is a genuine “average” person, is really a sincere, decent individual, and her views closely reflect those of middle America.

If there is one thing the left hates - its a non-Caucasian conservative or a female conservative, ESPECIALLY if they are photogenic and radiate “star” quality. They feel the Democrats should have a lock on those personalities.

Jindhal is a bright guy too and I don’t think he is a “geek”. Unlike some commentors here, I think the Republicans have a host of potential stars for the future: Jindhal, Sandford, Palin, Romney and others less well known at present like Cantor.

The problem with the Republican Party is they have too many back-stabbing subversive rats like Snowe, McCain, Spector, Collins, Graham, Crist, etc., who are political prostitutes on the make, more than ready to backstab conservatives just to be able to lick the filthy paws of the mainstream media and the entertainment elites and politically correct freaks.

Its time the RINOs and Rats were kicked out of the “big tent”.

I never watch network news; I just try to call ‘em like I see ‘em. It doesn’t help the conservative cause to sweep our candidates’ shortcomings under the rug. I have high hopes for Jindal, although I think he had a bad night, and by no means have I given up on Palin. But whoever runs for president in 2012 will have a tough road ahead of him or her. Psyching each other up about them won’t help. More productive to point out their flaws while there’s still time to fix them, don’t you think?

Why is someone a “troll” just because they prefer Jindal? Isn’t it possible to have a good faith disagreement, or is anyone who doesn’t favor your candidate automatically a bad person with ulterior motives?

You DU punks are terrified of Palin, aren’t ‘cha?

Jeez, can't we have civil discourse without it getting personal and vindictive? We can talk all we want about who is conservative enough and who isn't, but what we need one who is also dynamic and a good speaker. Coming across as a geekish Mr. Rogers isn't going to get us elected in 2012. But being pleasing to the eyes but not the best prepared isn't going to help either. Let's not eat our own like happened with Rudy supporters two years ago for not being sufficiently conservative.

“Palin is another George Bush, I’m afraid.”

Palin, who just cut the budget of the state of Alaska twice in as many months (IIRC), would be a faulty comparison. Much as I admired Bush, precious little can be said for his budget-cutting talents.

excellent post.

Better to be tough on him now while he has time to improve, than wait until we’ve lost to The One again just so we can whine “why didn’t you practice more on your delivery?”

Part of the reason she didn’t come off as well in a couple of interviews was that she was restricted by being McCain’s running mate and NOT her own person running her own race IMO.

Thompson never had a chance. He got in late, and exited early, and he was simply too old and tired to sell. He did a very bad job and it showed. In my view, Palinmania is just the latest version of Fredmania. It's like the tech bubble becoming the housing bubble. Just wanting something to be so doesn't make it so.

Fredmania was all faith, no results. Palin, I grant you, is far more energetic and appealling to people than Fred, but she failed on the big stage. Ok, you disagree with me on that. That's fine. Hopefully you can accept my views as my own, and not a Romney plot, or a MSM plot. I draw my own conclusions.

And while Fred's time has clearly passed, Palin is young enough to develop. I'm not writing her off forever. Just for now.

The Fredmaniacs were true believers. They had an excuse for everything, and simply wouldn't face facts. Maybe because the facts were so dire. If not Fred, then what? Romney? Huckabee? And so denial was the only strategy they could stomach.

I choose to see the cold hard facts as best as I can discern them. And like the last time round, I see the prospects as being very bad. If Palin and Jindal is the best we have, we're in trouble. No offense to either of them. They are fine people. I simply think that, for now anyway, they are where they are supposed to be.

I'm simply amazed at how barren the GOP is when it comes to presidential leadership. Maybe it's always been this bad. I don't know. Palin was so egregiously bad in my eyes that I see little chance she'll sell me, but it's possible. I'm the buyer, she's the seller. So the burden's on her. My job isn't to sell her, or convince myself she's the one. That's her job.

If we're so paranoid that we can't vet our candidates and debate them passionately on our own forum, then we deserve the crap we get. Say one critical thing and out come the moronic troll comments. It's a dysfunctional situation.

We may have our first real Jindal troll.”

Hey, it might even BE Jindal.

“Jeez, can’t we have civil discourse without it getting personal and vindictive?”

On FR, the answer to that question is “No.” That’s why I quit donating to FR and started donating to Lucianne. They keep the vicious element under control.

I hear ya. Rush defending Jindal now saying nothing that happened last night changes that.

I thought Jindahl did fine last night. However, building up Jindahl by tearing down Palin is more than counter productive.

I’m with you. Ireally like and admire and agree with with Palin, but when you can’t outsmart Katie Couric — even in a heavily edited forum, it’s a really bad sign.

Jindal is in a whole other class than Palin, but they are both lightweights. This is the sad truth. Jindals speech was completely uninspiring. The fact Palin gets some much attention around here is bewildering.

The “cold hard truth” as you put it, is that you want to vote for a rockstar and not a politician. The sad fact of the matter is that if you want a cult of personality candidate you need to be a democrat because they are the only ones that have the media organization to manufacture such a candidate. If you want a normal, intelligent, thoughful person that knows how to govern according to conservative principles then there are plenty of candidates.

I didn’t think Jindal did a bad job. I suspect some folks had unrealistic expectations. It’s this whole “beer goggles” approach to assessing prospective candidates. Jindal came across as very genuine and decent. He presented pretty much the way I think he is. He’s a nice guy, a bit of a nerd. He somehow got to be Gov of LA without really being an alpha male. He’s a little bit wimpy. All of that’s fine if that’s who you are. The problem is people want him to be something he’s not. I saw him for what he is. Is he presidential? Very, very doubtful.
