The 15-minute recording captures the bizarre horror of Monday's attack, which left a 55-year-old woman critically injured and the 200-pound ape dead in a hail of police gunfire.

"Hurry, please! He ripped her face off," the ape's frantic owner, Sandy Herold, 70, is heard telling the dispatcher on the tapes released Tuesday night.

"Listen to me, you have to shoot him."

The terrifying screeches of Travis the chimpanzee are heard as he mercilessly pounces on Herold's pal, Charla Nash.

"He killed her!" Herold told the dispatcher. "He ripped her apart. He tried attacking me. How fast can you get here?"

The dispatcher sounds incredulous as Herold describes how she had to stab the burly ape and only aggravated him.

"He's eating her," Herold screamed. "Please have them go faster."

I thought the ape was prescribed the xanax since it was getting over lyme disease?

I respect your FReeper nick.

24/7 cable TV is the ‘circus’ portion of the Imperial public dole.

The ‘bread’ part is being, er, stimulated as we speak.

LOLOLOL!!!!

Yes, I’ve heard the tape.

*** BOOM ***** BOOOM ****

Two dangerous parasites instantly tried, convicted, and dispatched.

If the lady had her own gun, she could have dispatched the stupid chimp before it could have done as much harm as it did.

Seems he should have kept a firearm of his own handy. With BIG bullets.

Yeah, but the chimp is very quick and has a very strong grip. If you threaten him with a gun this is a possible result:

I would suggest wearing a concealed handgun which has a trigger guard too small for the apes fingers in the case that the ape knows how to use it. The .38 I have with me appears to be a good candidate for such a use.

All good points ... prolly not a good idea to consider wild animals as friends either ... Unless you are Rex Harrison of course.

What in God’s name was she doing with a chimp in the first place?

Ever heard of "Jungle Fever"? 'nuff said.

I’ve heard that chimpanzees are nearly twice as strong as humans.

You make a good point. A trigger guard too small for the chimps finger could have saved the day. Another example of it is better to have a gun and not need it then need a gun and not have one. Buy American!

Statement: "Hurry, please! He ripped her face off,"

Response: Well. At least she faced up to the chimp problem.

That 911 aggravated me so much. Those people need to learn to dispatch a cop immediately when they get a call and ask thier stupid questions later.

I was on a team that wrote software for the 911 call centers. The system automatically connects to the appropriate agency and transfers the call information as the information is filled in by the dispatcher. As soon as she identified the nature of the call and the dispatcher selected the pulldown, all the information was transferred to the police and rescue center.

“Travis’ violence may be linked to a recent bout with Lyme disease, a tick-borne infection that can cause paranoia and mood swings in people, said Stamford police Capt. Richard Conklin. “

This is true of dogs also.

Chimps are defintely NOT the exotic “pet” that anyone except a professional primatologist should be involved with.

They are incredibly strong. I remember a guy at a zoo telling me he saw one pick up an industrial freezer and throw it across the room in a fit of range.

Its a tragedy for the woman who was injured and I pray she recovers.

It was a tragedy for the owner who was obviously very attached to the creature.

And it was a tragedy for the chimp who should have been left in the jungle where he belonged.

None of these actors should ever have been together. It was a bad mistake which turned into a mutual nightmare.
