Set 'em up! No curb on bourbon as Americans drown their sorrows

As the economy continues to recede, are cutting back on their liquor — with the exception of whiskey.

Sales of bourbons such as Jack Daniels and Maker’s Mark are bucking a slump in sales of distilled spirits that set in during the final months of last year, according to industry officials.

It’s not clear whether in hard economic times drinkers are looking for comfort in the bottom of a glass of Wild Turkey, or whether Americans long enamored with vodka, rum and tequila have rediscovered one of the nation’s oldest spirits. George Washington had a working still at Mount Vernon.

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States said that whiskey sales rose 4.3 percent by dollar value and 1.3 percent by volume in 2008. And in a trend contrary to other segments of the alcoholic beverage industry, the expensive stuff, or super premium whiskey, logged the hottest growth. In other areas of the market, consumers are trading down to less-expensive brands, analysts report.

It’s barbaric to ruin a fine bourbon by adding trash to it. Just drink it. Woodford Reserve is a bit of heaven on a brisk winter day.

Friday night, I stopped in at the neighborhood liquor store and the parking lot was FULL! We do have a big rodeo going on..but I was still stunned at how many folks were buying liquor. Thinking of buying some liquor stocks Monday morning....lol

George Washington had a working still at Mount Vernon.

Mt. Vernon rebuilt Washington's distillery a couple years back. It's not part of Mt. Vernon proper, but several miles down the road co-located with the Grist Mill (which is a VERY neat place to see in operation).

I went there last year ... they'd apparently messed up their first batch and were giving the distilling process another try. Having been to other distilleries (Makers Mark in KY for instance), the Mt.Vernon/Washington's Distillery is definitely "period" in nature.

I like Makers for mixing, but otherwise prefer Knob Creek, Jefferson's Reserve and Buffalo Trace.

From a distance, I thought that label said “ Krupp van Bismark’s family massacre”.

I was thinking...FREAKY, I gotta try me some of that massacre booze!

More likely, Obama’s fault. Get loaded while you watch your country be taken over by the dictator.

Ok, what do you call it then? And if that’s not bourbon, then what do you call southern comfort?

“Southern Comfort (occasionally referred to as SoCo) is a fruit, spice, and whiskey flavored liqueur produced since 1874.”

From Wiki - anyway, it ain't bourbon.

Jack Daniels is Tennessee Whiskey. It is the charcoal filtering that distinguishes it from bourbon. I’m not big on splitting hairs, but the folks at Jack Daniels are the first to point out that it is not bourbon.

Southern Comfort is a sweetened bourbon-based liqueur.

Keep an eye out for Templeton Rye. My BIL gave me a bottle for my birthday in September. Just finished it yesterday. It's not too bad...

Elijah Craig is my favorite. That burnt cask flavor is magnificent.

Jack Daniels (along with George Dickel) is Tennessee Whiskey. It includes a carbon filtering process that's not part of the Bourbon process. That's why it's not Bourbon, and is considered Tennessee Whiskey. As for Southern Comfort, I call it yuck. And, no, it's not Bourbon. It's a combination alcohol that contains fruits and spices as well as whiskey. Again, something not part of the Bourbon process.
