The Great Storyteller
Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them. —Matthew 13:34

In his book Teacher Man, Pulitzer Prize-winner Frank McCourt reflects on his 30 years as a teacher in New York City high schools. He used a variety of techniques in his English and creative writing classes, but one that seemed to surface again and again was the power of a compelling story to capture attention and encourage learning.

This method of instruction was used by the greatest Teacher of all—the Lord Jesus Christ. The scholarly religious leader Nicodemus said to Jesus, “We know that You are a teacher come from God” (John 3:2). Yet when Jesus addressed the crowds that followed Him, He didn’t recite great truths of the Talmud. Rather, He spoke with the homespun style of a storyteller.

The parables of Jesus endure because they showcase matters of the heart. Through the story of the Pharisee and tax collector (Luke 18), we learn about God’s grace and forgiveness. And the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15) showcases God’s love for repentant sinners.

The inspired parables of Jesus teach us about Him and the life He wants us to lead. We too can use our faith-stories to point others to the ultimate Storyteller and Teacher, whose own life is the greatest story ever told.

Take control of my words today,
May they tell of Your great love;
And may the story of Your grace
Turn some heart to You above. —Sees

A good way to learn God’s truth is to teach it to others.

small towns**

Love living here, but it can be a pain sometimes too. Middle of summer and I left my car windows down during an afternoon deluge, to the point that I had a couple of inches of water in the floorboards. Next day, I left all the doors open hoping to dry it out. Wet I could deal with, musty and mildewy, no thanks. I park next to the store —behind a huge row of shrubs—in a ball field parking lot because ours is so small.

One of the town cops came by and asked me what was wrong. I told him, and he just started laughing. Told me that at least 6 people had called the police dept and reported that my car doors were open and they were worried about me. I appreciate their concern but I’m still laughing about that.

You know you live in a small town when everyone knows who’s working by what vehicles are/aren’t there. Snort

Have a great day!

Thank you for the touching Daily Bread message this morning, Mr. Mayor. I love the story of the Prodigal son. It always touches me.

Have a wonderful day. When do you go for your stress test?

You are so funny....did you ever think about being a comedian?

I got an email one time that said “It was really good to live in a small town when you were older and forgot what you were doing because someone else in that small town could tell you what you were doing.”

At least your police department was on your case! LOL~~~

Gardengirl, I just loved this... it reminded me of " Mayberry"! Oh that would be so wonderful to be able to do that. We dare not leave " anything" open...here in Los ANgeles! Polly

I was watched like an an egg ready to hatch.

Meg, your story is so much like mine! I can identify with being watched like an egg ready to hatch. LOL! First baby with first time grandparents (my parents) arriving just before the due date, to be with me and my husband for the big event. They actually drove over from the coast a few days early because it was February and there was a concern they wouldn't be able to get here, that winter storms would close the grapevine - the mountain pass between the valley and Los Angeles. So, they came early and they waited and waited and then my dad had to go back to work, so he left my mom with us and she waited and waited......two more weeks until my son decided to be born. I am sure those were two very long weeks to her too!! I remember, we put together endless jigsaw puzzles to pass the time.

Have you seen Twilight yet? What did you think of it? I am still waiting for it to come out on DVD. Netflix will have it next month.
