McCain: I don’t see any GOP votes for the stimulus in the Senate

Too good to check? Maybe, but I don’t think Maverick’s bluffing this time. So craptastic is this crap sandwich that Democrat Ben Nelson felt obliged to warn The One this morning that he can’t count on a straight party-line yes from his own side, hint hint.

And to add insult to injury, he chose Fox News as the network on which to deliver that message.

The Democrats don’t need the Republicans for any of this. What they don’t want is to be sitting ducks when this all goes south and doesn’t help the economy and the RNC has the supreme talking point “Republicans wanted to put money directly into the pocket of the American taxpayer; the Democrats wanted to pick that pocket and put money everywhere else.” If they don’t have Republican votes, they can’t try reverse finger pointing.

I hope they stand firm. New Democrat senators from usually conservative districts may want to think twice before voting for this. You may have a six-year term, but we have the “memory of an elephant.”

"...if they strip enough crap out of the sandwich, the decision to vote against it will be significantly harder for the GOP than it is now. On the other hand, who cares? The bill’s bound to pass anyway, so anything that can be done to de-pork it is all to the good. "

You do realize professional politicians aren't amateurs?

The plan all along was to take pork out in the Senate (what fun some of the Dems must have had thinking up pie-in-the-sky rewards for their constituents to put in it- to be taken out later). Cover for the Republicans- and the Dems- who vote for it.

The media will praise the hard work of the Senators, and the bipartisan President Obama and the bipartisan House Dems who accept the bipartisan Senate version of the bill.

And there'll still be plenty of Dem pork in it, just slightly not so much.

Yup the Dems control appropriations 17-13. The bill came out 21-9. --------------------------------------------------------

But Appropriations Committee ranking member Thad Cochran, R-Miss., said that while he agrees on the urgent need to address the slump, the panel is being asked "to take a leap of faith that this massive amount of spending will stimulate a suffering economy, despite evidence that much of the funding will not be spent in the next year or two."

Cochran's comments came on the heels of new Congressional Budget Office report noting that about 65 percent of the bill's overall funding would be spent within the first 18 months of enactment. That is below President Obama's goal of spending 75 percent in 18 months. A previous CBO report on the discretionary spending in the House version indicated that less than half would be spent by the end of fiscal 2010.

Cochran recommended that some stimulus spending be handled in the regular annual appropriations bills, which would allow the stimulus bill to focus spending on short-term job creation. Cochran voted for the package, but he said he did so only out of deference to Inouye. He added he reserved the right to oppose the measure on the Senate floor after he examines the measure in full, with the tax component.

I know they have enough votes to pass what-ever they want to on the floor(and why they are doing this bi-partisan scam)....I was asking about committees that vote on these bills before they go to the floor?

Am I right that the dems also don’t need any republican votes to get things out of these committees as well?

Just looking for clarification on committees?

Dittos on the standing firm! We need to burn up their phone lines Monday morning and the fax lines through the week-end.

You need to relax and quit jumping to conclusions. There is a pattern developing here of one or two GOP voting to move something from the Committee to the floor on almost everything. Floor discussion and votes are completely open to public view on CSPAN II. Committee hearings are up and down and waste of time when the other side has the votes so two Republicans vote to take it to the floor so everyone can view the statements about the bill.

Girl in the office was right — they want it on the full floor of the Senate and out of Committee so the whole Country can see the Dems railroading it through. Both will vote against it on the floor.

Some Republicans have figured out how to play the game early in this session.

I wish I had your faith...but I watched Olympia Snowe vote against every tax ammendment the repuplicans offered the other day in a committee when there was no reason to do so.

That women and a few other republican senators will vote for Obama. They have stuck their fingers in the eyes on conservatives many times before. Why should we show any faith in them now?

Thanks for the info. Sounds weak to me. I am a bit tired of the frat boy mentality of some of these senators. Why show deference to a democrat?

When have they ever showed ‘deference’ to a republican?

It is time to fight!!

They could have voted for it to put it on the floor to force a stand on it. A committee vote doesn’t mean support.

There will be at least one Republican that will vote to end the debate giving the dems the 60 they need to bring the bill to a vote and then all the Republicans can vote against it and even a few dems from conservative areas and it will pass. They only real way to defeat it is that all 41 Republicans vote no when they close debate and keep them from getting 60 votes. Don’t hold your breath. But it sure would be sweet.

I guess we will see next Tuesday. What is the problem with standing up against this ridiculous ‘spending bill’ in the committees and on the floor? The dems don’t need our votes to get it out of committee either.

Just say what you mean and mean what you say at all times.

It’s a calculated risk that they know there are not enough votes for it to pass as is so they want to force a vote and see it defeated now. That would give the negotiators less time to come up with Republican votes or cram more pork into it.

There are all sorts of political calculations and maneuvers involved in the legislative process.

The good news is that many Senators of both parties don’t like the amount of entitlements in this bill but it is the Senate after all and nothing is guaranteed. They tend to be more moderate than the House. Do you really think Senators of Obama’s party want him to look a fool so soon after taking office. They want to fix this so it will pass—Conservatives don’t!

Well..Obama is having a Super Bowl party for them this week-end too. That is, after he gave them a $100.00 an ounce steak dinner, complements from the American taxpayer yesterday.

Hope our guys/gals don’t fall for the tyrant’s charms....lol

LOL..can you imagine the message it would send to America if the republicans all stand firm? If Obama can’t even get a few republicans on board for his Marxist plans in America..how in the hell is he going to ‘negotiate’ with Iran, Al Qaeda, North Korea, Hezbollah, Russia, China, etc. etc.

Besides being the absolute right thing to do for America....It would be such sweet revenge for all of the democrats and the media’s lies and distortions for the last 8 years!

And why would they? It’s smart to do it that way. O isn’t running in 2010. Keep the barrels pointed at Pelosi and Reid.

I’d like this to pass with no GOP. Some may want it to fail so the GOP can bargain the Dems down to a better package the 2nd time, but I don’t.

You can bargain a triple layer crap sandwich down to a double, but in the end it’s still a crap sandwich. Let the Dems own it.

Penelope—you’re not falling all over yourself with admiration for how bi-partisan he is for sharing the Super Bowl with the other side?

Didn’t Bush have Kennedy over for movies or some such nonsense?

I hope the Republicans grow a pair, en masse. Didn’t we all say “it took a Carter to get a Reagan?”

Unfortunately, the “leader” of the party was a RINO and the rest followed his lead. Maybe they feel boldened with Bush out of office.
