Evangelist Ted Haggard, His Wife and the Gay Sex Scandal on Oprah
Oprah.com ^ | 01/28/2009

Posted on 01/28/2009 12:52:09 PM PST by Dr. Scarpetta

Former evangelical leader Ted Haggard on the life he hid from his wife, his children and 30 million devoted followers. The gay sex and drug scandal that took him down.

In his first television interview since the scandal, Ted talks with Oprah about why he kept secret a part of his life he calls dark and repulsive.

"It was the first time that dark area of my life I'd worked so hard to fight against was coming to the surface," he says. "And to say it, and to talk about it, was so shameful and shocking. Even to me."

In the days that followed, Ted says he came clean with Gayle about his sexual immorality and drug use. "I can't think of anything that would have been a greater shock to me, and, literally, I felt as though the rug had been pulled out from under me," Gayle says.

Yet, she stayed by her husband's side. "I was going to stay with Ted because, first of all, I love him deeply and I knew that we had a very real relationship," she says.

Through therapy, Gayle says she realized that her marriage wasn't a lie and that Ted's struggles were only one aspect of him and didn't take away from the life they had built together. "I choose to forgive him, and I choose to love him. I made the decision. Then I had to work it out. And that was the painful process for me."

This guy was a huge hypocrite who lied and continued to lie for 30 years to his church attendees. Forgiveness is important but it should not be free. This guy needs sometimes to wander the deserts of Egypt before he can find the promised land.

Yes. Repentance should be accompanied with humility. In reading news accounts of this documentary and interviews, I don't sense much except their saying the right words for a PR rehabilitation.

Why does he feel the need to do the TV talk show circuit to further call attention to the fact he is an abnormal little fag?

Probably because he has a book to sell (or is working on one). Yawn.

Why anybody would watch Oprah in the first place is the greater mystery. But I guess people are bored and looking for cheap thrills, and Oprah delivers them.

cry...cry...cry. He was deceitful, telling people ONE THING, and living another. No respect for the guy, he needs to ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES of things he himself set into motion. Give people TIME AND SPACE, maybe in 20 years we’d like to see him on TV, right now, it’s just because he needs the pity and the MONEY.

Yeah, he was a deceitful schlep, but I feel for the guy.

Many of us struggle with inner demons that defy our code of morality and even our faith.

“Geezzzz, with the world falling a part on dollar at a time, we have better things to talk about.”

Why do people go on threads and complain that they don’t want to talk about it? For heaven’s sake, there’s a zillion other threads that might interest you, find another one. Skip over the ones that you don’t want to join in on and don’t tell other people what would be better for them to discuss.

Besides, nobody forced that sicko dork to go on Oprah.

It would seem that Haggard is the one keeping this issue alive.

LOL! Where was Rick Warren? I thought Oprah is promoting his new book and magazine.

These sleazy pastors can just go on Oprah and all is forgiven. Sick. He seems to set off the gaydar for many.

O and O infiltrating evangelicals by finding slimy sellout pastors who support abortionists.

Very liberal bent basically talking about how Christians were hypcoritical for not forgiving the guy.

LETS MAKE AND GET ONE THING PERFECTLY CLEAR HERE: This guy WAS NOT A CHRISTIAN!!! He can call himself anything and everything he wants, BUT HE WAS NO CHRISTIAN!! Had he been a Christian and lived the life of a Christian, he would not have done this. He IS A HIPOCRIT! Yes, that he is. A liar he is. A cheat he is. But, a Christian he was not. There a many who call themselves Christians, who actually get baptized, but are not living the lives of Christians and are not TRUE Christians. Period!

It is all about the $$$$ baby! Haggard and Rick Warren are sucking up to Oprah and Obama.

“Praise Obama - leaving babies to die in a tray is not so bad.”

“Jesus never said partial borth abortion is a bad thing”

Maybe Haggard, Rick Warren and gay bishop Gene Robinson can all be on Oprah next week. They are all frauds.

Amen. His followers are delusional. Forgive him but tell him to get lost. This man harms Christians.

Oprah and her money helped get a baby killer elected. She and O are trying to create a wedge adn gain evangelical votes. We are being lulled into being sheep thanks to TV.

Haggard just wants the money (and probably more gay sex).
