If the numbers announced so far in January keep up, we’ll end the month with at least 500,000 jobs lost just due to layoffs. January could very well end up with 700,000 total job losses.
Anyone who claims we’re not in a depression is deserving of an officer slot in the Ostrich Brigade.
However, as McCain (not my favorite guy) has pointed out -- the way the stimulus package is currently being implemented, it just puts cash in the vaults of big corporations. The money is not aimed at producing jobs.
I'm not convinced that we need to spend trillions of dollars which we don't have. But we are doing that -- and we're doing it badly.

But I don’t understand.. I was told and told during the two year long election that if Democrats were elected.. We would immediately get a better economy. But now the great leader.. I mean the president is saying that its going to get worse before it gets better..... his vice-leader.. I mean president is saying the same thing... Imagine my shock and surprise.... We are in severe recession.. the bottom has not fallen out yet.. but we are WELL on our way..
I think the numbers being announced (7.2%) are bullshiite. Looking at U6 gives a much better idea of what’s going on.
Check this out:

The Gov reported a 0.4% incrwase in U3 from Nov to Dec; however, it seems unlikely that a 0.4% increase would account for the Unemployment emergencies occuring across the counry. The Ohio unemployment agency normally processes about 7,500 calls a day but that rose to about 80,000/day in december. This article from USA today would tend to suggest that there was more than a 0.4% increasde in unemployment between Nov and Dec:

don’t worry, O will import millions of new immigrants to do your job. That should take care of the economy.
If O bats an eyelash, McCain will vote for it
That’s a non-starter. Pelosi says its more important to hand out rubbers and food stamps.
Our current Recession/Depression is the Fault of the Democrats. Everything was fine until the Democrats started running their election campaign against the Republican Administration of President Bush and John McCain. The Republicans bear NO Responsibility for the Depression.
No..., no...., it’s just an MSM-generated myth... doncha know...
[a common refrain seen on FReeper threads...]
You said — “Anyone who claims were not in a depression is deserving of an officer slot in the Ostrich Brigade.”
I think we have a lot of those officers on Free Republic... :-)
43,000 jobs in 2 hours this morning is a hefty contribution to the Depression idea.
Hey, I heard all last summer and fall that we weren’t in a recession. I was given statistics on what constitutes a recession and I doubted them then.
I don’t doubt now we are in the beginning of a Depression.
A lot of people on here said we were in a bubble and I didn’t believe them, so I guess I was an officer of that brigade too. I have since been demoted, however.
“Anyone who claims were not in a depression is deserving of an officer slot in the Ostrich Brigade”
I will say this, we are nowhere near the depression my grandmother went through, a 50 year old widow with 5 children, and that my father grew up in. If we don’t return to sound business practices and compendent governmental policies we may get there. Does this make me delusional?
:-)
Hang on for the rocky ride...
A houses of cards economic boom that couldnt last. Democrats blame Bush, republicans blame Barney Frank. The truth is we were lied to by everyone in Washington including media, and continue to be now. They have no plans, just agendas. Run the country into the ground and point fingers, and repeat.
Make that 72,500 in 2 hours this morning.
