The Covenant School fired its girls basketball coach Sunday, the same day he posted a message on a youth basketball Web site saying he disagreed with school officials who had publicly apologized for the team's 100-0 victory over Dallas Academy. In reporting the firing, Kyle Queal, Covenant's head of school, emphasized that former coach Micah Grimes "now only represents himself" when discussing the game, which has become a national talking point. Queal said he could not say whether the firing was a direct result of the posting and declined to answer any questions.

The most disturbing thing about this incident is that it is everybody’s business. Everything has become socialized, nationalized, federalized. Why is everybody talking about this? They talk about it on ESPN for crying out loud! Why not go about your own business? Do you all have children in either of the schools involved. Don’t people have their own lives to live?
We have become one. One family. One people. One Reich.

"(There’s no way to beat somebody worse than 78-0)."

Uh, this coach found a way.

The issue is one of sportsmanship, one of the primary core values you teach young minds.....

This coach only understood unrelenting hard competition, no balance, no humility, no compassion......

He should be fired......

"“call off the dogs” when it reached 50-0."

Uh, there were only 8 players on the team, not 15. There wasn't even a full second string to insert, much less a third. Look at the quarter scores. They did back off somewhat.

Why? Because his team won? That is part of the problem with America: Too many people seem to think that someone shouldn’t win because it might make the losers “feel bad” about themselves.

They did back off somewhat.

probably not enough, though.

It would have been a good opportunity to practice the four corner offense. They probably werent using a shot clock.

Aren't "learning problems" a requirement for a good basketball team? or is that just mens basketball?

You do know that the losing team were kids with all sorts of emotional and learning problems right? Beating up the handicapped should not make anyone proud.

The coach would have been better off if he had just forfeited the game.Maybe that would have satisfied the clowns who fired him.

It’s tough to teach learning disabled kids how to run the 1-3-1 or even how to pick and roll.

Aren’t there enough schools for the developmentally delayed in Dallas so they could have their own league to play in, much as the Special Olympics program? It’s difficult to see why such schools are allowed to compete with teams with regular athletes, who are then pilloried for running up the score.

This all fits in with the current trend of "mainstreaming" those students who are physically or mentally handicapped. They can't really compete, but the schools follow a game of "lets pretend" where they are placed in competition with normal students.

Of course these handicapped students really can't compete with normal students, and I'm sure it is distressful and disruptive for both kinds of students, but it fits the liberal mantra of "we're all equal (in outcome)".

This coach, running a blow-out score, violated an unwritten rule and exposed the hypocrisy, which the school system does not like.

It's a bad thing, in general, to get the kids to back off. It's good to put in those who need the most experience.

When one of my kids was five or six, he was an animal on the soccer field. His parents told him to back way off, and he never really was a useful forward for the rest of his "career" (through 1 yr HS). In fact, he eventually dropped out of soccer but basically became a defenseman in water polo and lacross.

It'd be better to have a mercy rule to just stop the game at some point (with the concurrence of the lower scoring team's coach).

Yes, when I coached, I recall there was a 10 run slaughter rule in effect to prevent these types of blowouts (in baseball).

Competition is good, but running up the score like that is questionable. In the pros it is a different story. I remember last season some people griped that Belichek ran up the score a few times, but if you are getting paid to play, then it is your job to stop the other team.

But for some people, it is more difficult to accept a loss by the score of 60-59 than it is to lose 100-0.

“It’s tough to teach learning disabled kids how to run the 1-3-1 or even how to pick and roll.”

Uh, I know nothing about sports unless there are horses involved so I have no idea what you are talking about. That said, everyone seems to think that these kids are much more disabled than they are. These girls aren’t retarded, I saw them talking about this on the news, they seem perfectly normal. They are certainly physically normal and look like they can play basketball just fine. I guarantee they are just as smart, or smarter, than some of the dumbass pro basketball players I’ve heard about. The only difference is the girls suck at basketball.

I don’t really like that the coach got fired over this, even though he shouldn’t have let his kids run up the score that much; I’m a big believer in the opportunity for forgiveness and redemption.

As to this particular game, one possible solution would have been for the referee to meet with the two coaches when it reached say 30-0, officially declaring victory for the winning team. Then the referee and the two coaches could have created two new, balanced teams by mixing players from both teams. The two new teams would continue playing for the remaining gametime as a scrimmage. That way the losing kids would still have some fun playing ball under more balanced conditions, and the winning kids would have more fun too because there would actually be some real competition on the court.

Maybe the Mavs could hire him, at least he knows something about coaching defense.
