From the "OMG what is she wearing now?" files, Michelle Obama does it again; she managed to escape her handlers wearing yet another fashion atrocity.
One bad outfit you can forgive. But three, each worn to a major event, well, that starts to be more of a fashion statement - and the statement Michelle Obama is trying to make speaks volumes. Very, very loud volumes.
Lets recap:
Election night dress.

This is the dress that started it all. This horrid little number by Narciso Rodriguez was certainly eye-popping. Perhaps no one noticed that it made the new first lady look like a giant black widow spider. The addition of a cardigan to this busy, contemporary mess of a frock, was akin to putting a pashmina shawl over your cutoffs - it just didn't make sense.
The Inaugral Ball gown by Jason Wu.

At first glance this dress seemed okay, but after a few minutes of considering this feathery creation, it dawned on me how cheap and weird a one strap feathery prom gown looked on the first lady. It also finalized, at least for me, the notion that her figure might be part of the problem. All her dresses seem to fit oddly, which I suppose she can't help. You would think however, that would dictate to her or at least her handlers, that better choices were in order.
Don't Get me wrong, her figure isn't bad and lord knows I am not one to criticize anyone's figure for sure. Its just that her clothing choices don't seem to accentuate the positive. Even Hillary, no figure model herself, managed to pull off a sense of style and if she could do it, Michelle has no excuse.
The National Cathedral prayer service dress.

For those of you who missed it, Michelle turned out in yet another glaring example of her um,. fashion sense. Let me try to describe; a gray, or maybe shades of green, giant, contemporary and floral print, a-line dress that from a distance (especially on TV) looked as if someone spayed our first lady with globs of paint.
The sheer number of adjectives needed to describe this dress should tell you it is pretty awful. Heard from the sidelines; "Where is the secret service? Someone has assaulted the first lady!" I can't imagine who suggested this outfit, or rather, who didn't pipe up and tell Michelle that maybe she shouldn't. I can't imagine anyone thinking this was a good idea.
Michelle has made many more fashion choices that are worthy of comment. I won't even go into the yellow lace suit with mis-matched shades of green gloves, shoes and a red handbag.
I have seen some commentary in the fashion rags about how Michelle is attempting to copy the style of Jackie O. Yeah. Perhaps they meant to say that she is attempting to interpret Jackie's style. Maybe its art, who knows. One thing is certain; Michelle O is not Jackie O. The only thing they do have in common is that much like her purported fashion role model she is certainly managing to define her own signature style.
Let hope for her sake that history neglects to note that this first lady was one feather headdress away from dressing like Cher circa 1972.
***That thing she had on last night looked like she got in a fight with a flock of chickens. Up close, it was worse.***
LOL! Best description I’ve heard.
Apparently one who has access to all kinds of designers all of a sudden. I'm hoping that she finds designers with better sense.
That was my daughters observation. “Oh my God she was in an accident with a chicken truck!” LOL
Her clothing choices do not flatter her.
I can’t look at her clothes for noticing how she slump-shouldered she is.
You want to attack the Obamas? Act like an adult and attack them on their beliefs and policies, instead of acting like a juvenile and attacking them on the way they dress.
Too bad that you don’t get it but that’s the way it goes sometimes.
Btw, that woman represent the US. Looking awful does not reflect well on us.
I totally understand though how anyone that read one of these kinds of threads on FR might think "Wow those Freepers, what a bunch of pissy, bitchy, small-minded, whiners."
Btw, if you had read more posts you'd see that I have been saying she looked lovely in her wedding photos. She's getting really bad advice on clothing. She's our First Lady and needs to get better advice. Sorry if you can't take a group of honest lady freepers. This thread would make you cry I guess. And there's a ping list.
Oh please. It would be one thing if she wore jeans and a t-shirt to the inauguration and parties, but she didn't. She has dressed completely appropriately. She just has a style that some people don't like. So what - get over yourselves!
Michelle isn't embarrassing anyone or "misrepresenting us" by the way she dresses. That's a lame excuse at this point for people that just want to be small and mercilessly critical.
“read the BARF http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28768077/, the article points out The dress followed her curves paying special attention to the hips because the woman has huge hips.”
Here is a tid-bit from that article:
“Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush wore uninspired clothes that seemed to make a case against the women’s being unique.”
This is why I think it is “in bounds’ to talk about Michelle’s terrible sense of style. I call it Obama Derangement Syndrome, defined as the blinded love for all things Obama. Objectively, she is not very attractive, and the dresses the last few days look terrible on her. She is not very ‘feminine’ in her movements...but those at MSNBC suffer from ODS, and think she looks fabulous. And, of course, they have to take a swipe at Laura Bush (and Hillary) in the process. ODS is real, and dangerous. And this Jackie-O crap is an instructive example.
It's possible to be honest without being insulting, and I see a lot of just plain insults on this thread.
I'm not being "mealy mouthed". I intend to criticize Obama's beliefs and policies whenever I disagree. I just refuse to act like a 3rd grader or someone from DU and insult people because I don't like their fashion sense. That reflects poorly on FR and the conservative cause.
And McCain backed down everytime Obama yelled "Ouch!". Worked for McCain too, right?
The Repubs in the House and Senate won by being polite too.
I am going to state what I think. If you are offended, too bad but I will be honest from now on.
Oh and, read my tagline.
Great idea...you go ahead and insult Michelle’s clothes. That’ll show those democrats that we mean business!
I’m sure it will if conservatives quit mimicking rugs.
I think her inaugural wardrobe is overcompensation for the election night disaster.
1) The Black Widow dress. On election night, somebody in the campaign thought she should look “on fire” as in smokin’ red hot. They wanted to send the message of burning energy. The problem is that she looked evil and almost devilish especially in contrast with the rest of her family clad in black as if in mourning.
As a result, the Obama people decided to do the polar opposite.
2) The Grandmother-of-the-bride outfit. The swearing in suit was as matronly and as fussy as something the Queen Mother wore in 1975.
3) The Quinceañera dress. For those who don’t know, a quincenera is the name given to a “coming out” event in certain Hispanic traditions. I think the dress is sweet and angelic, but the age limit should be 17 .. maybe, just maybe 20 but that’s pushing it.
So now that Mrs. Obmama has gone from one extreme to the other, she can now settle on her own style which is quite nice from what I’ve seen.
