I always think of Terri Schiavo whenever I see articles like this.
I think Malesherbes said it the best.
For me the Terri Schiavo case was the acid test of whether we were a civilized nation. We failed the test.

True, and yet let us remember, many tried to save her. The powers that be ultimately failed, but many many Americans, some in high position, did their utmost.
