This is yesterday's news, but with the library closed and technical difficulties at home I had no way to post it.

I have a couple updates to post but I will have to get them in a little later.

"Rochester! You were supposed to pack that in your luggage."

"Sorry Mr. Benny. It wouldn't fit. That's where all the money was hidden."

The cost of purchasing democratic votes ranged from $.25 to $1.00 except for the guy who claimed he got $2.00.

Note in the end of the article that publicity of this incident with Jack Benny had resulted in a considerable increase of duty collected..................

Couldn’t help but not the little piece on the Democrat tradition of buying votes, this time in Philadelphia.

It’s time to stop this ridiculous “War on Jewelry.” Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it.

Yeah, and George Burns also pleaded guilty. I wonder what Gracie thought about that...

I just watched “It’s a Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World” again the other night.
Absolutely hilarious, as always.
Jack Benny and Rochester are both in it.

Gracie: "Well George, I always said they'd indict a ham sandwich if they wanted to. This time is was only the ham."

George: "Say goodnight, Gracie".

Gracie: "Goodnight Gracie!"

YouTube has all kinds of video from these shows. They’re in FLV format as usual. I use Firefox with the Download Helper extension to download them, then covert them to mp4 files with a program called Total Video Converter. That way I can play them through other video software or on my Palm.

I’ve found a whole bunch of program videos from that era I’ve downloaded.

I could watch those older progams for hours on YouTube.

I have a copy of the transcript of Jack Benny’s bail hearing:

The Court: Mr. Benny, I’m setting your bail at $1,000.00. You must either post that bond, or remain in custody until your trial date. Will you post the bond or remain incarcerated?

Mr. Benny: [pause]

The Court: Well?

Mr. Benny: I’m thinking...I’m thinking!!!

Here's an interesting article in the UK Telegraph today too (Jan 12).

Is there a price for our naval pact with Germany? - Jan 12, 1939
Danger in Consenting to Limit Air Strength as a Return Gesture.

By the Right Hon. Winston Churchill, M.P. Last Updated: 9:28PM GMT 11 Jan 2009

There is much talk about the Anglo-German Naval Agreement now that the Germans have announced their intention of building to a 100 per cent parity with British submarine tonnage. There is no doubt that Germany has a right to do this under the Treaty. The question arises whether the British Government of 1935 acted rightly or wrongly in making the agreement.

The official view in Whitehall is that it was a master-stroke of policy, the first great step in the process of “appeasement” and an example to prove to all the world how easy it is to have working arrangements between democratic Parliamentary nations and Totalitarian dictatorships.

It is not possible to judge such matters without looking back to their origins.

We have to remind ourselves of the situation in the summer of 1935. The process is not pleasant because it shows us how hideously our affairs have deteriorated since then.
