Is Bush The Worst President Of The Past 50 Years?
NPR ^ | Jan 2009 | Linton Weeks

When a group of pundits gathered for a recent Oxford-style debate, the proposition alone was provocative: "Bush 43 Is the Worst President of the Past 50 Years." But when you consider that one of the panelists defending President Bush's legacy was his longtime adviser Karl Rove, the night became even more interesting

--snip--

Before and after each debate, the audience is asked to vote on the motion. At the start of the evening, 65 percent of the audience was in favor of the proposition that George W. Bush is the worst American president of the past 50 years; 17 percent were against the motion; and 18 percent were undecided. By the end of the debate, 68 percent were for the motion; 27 percent were against it; and 5 percent were still undecided.

Karl Rove and William Kristol were against this proposition (namely they said that Bush was NOT the worst President..) and they won the debate. A very interesting one and very good speaking by William Kristol (Karl was good too except for the last bit where he turned a bit petty attacking Jacob Weisburg's book and I thought that THAT reduced some of the margin of victory)

In the event of
a tie between Carter and
Bush, I think Carter

should win as the Worst--
The Bush twins are cooler than
Amy in all ways.

Sounds like 68% of the audience were die-hard Bush Haters at the get-go. What surprises me is that only 3% of these Haters took the trouble of lying at the beiginning and pretended to be “undecided” to begin with.

Save one guy, yes he's been an absolute disaster. A total
lightweight. He couldn't communicate a cogent idea with the directions written on the heel.

He's certainly the reason we have a fool like Obama now.

A worse commentary on our society is that Bush, failed president that he is, was the best choice of the six that have run for the office since 2000.

Truly a hideous president.

I’m sure if most of this same forum had voted, when our first President, George Washington had just left office, they would have voted him the worst President!
What a waste, a better choice would have been to vote for the best President!
Maybe we need to vote for the worst of forum panels of all times. I just might be them!
Are they on the taxpayers dole?

George could have been great, but I don’t know what happened. Maybe history will judge him differently in a few years. I still think Carter is the worst of the worst.

“He’s certainly the reason we have a fool like Obama now.”

Bill Clinton lowered the bar for every president wannabe from 92 onward.

Please could you add the following statement in parenthesis to the title? (debate on intelligence-squared).

I don't want this to be thought of as some query!

G.W. Bush was the best president in my lifetime and I can remember presidents back to LBJ.

And nope on Carter. The worst president of my lifetime was Clinton, who was worse than Nixon.

In fact if I ordered them it woudl probably be:

1. G.W. Bush
2. Reagan
3. G.H.W. Bush
4. Carter
5. Ford
6. LBJ
7. Nixon
8. Clinton

Well, I think the fact that Rove and Kristol managed to get a higher score at the end is a significant point and showed that many (me included) did not remember all the good Budsh had done.
