Top dog and cat names of 2008
PMSNBC ^ | 1/7/09

Move over, Fluffy and Fido. There's a new batch of pet names in town: "people" names! Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's largest and oldest provider of pet health insurance, scoured its database of more than 466,000 insured pets to find the most popular dog and cat names of 2008. (Animals not insured by VPI were not included in the survey.)

But for those who like to think outside the (litter) box, VPI also came up with a list of unusual pet names, like Meatwad and Miss Fuzzbutt. The company's employees selected 50 unusual dog names and 50 unusual cat names, and then voted for the top 10 in each category. See which names were up to snuff.

My dog must think his name is "He."

When I call him by his name, he just sits there. But when I say "Guess what he did today?" my dog sits up and looks at me.

My mixed breed dog from a local shelter is Abby, but usually I’m screaming “No, Stop That, Off the Sofa, No Jumping, Eat! etc., etc. She’s a picky eater, like a cat!

She is a real piece of work, stubborn, suspicious, rowdy, unfriendly to other dogs at times, even after expensive training. Afraid of strange men but kisses up, fawns over husband and male groomer. I’m OK when “daddy” is not around — when he’s home I can pound sand and I don’t exist.

Got her a pink collar tag that says DIVA which says it all. When I tell you what her breeds are, you’ll get it - had DNA done and she’s dominant German Shepherd, then equal parts Chow, SharPei and Tibetan Spaniel. Has the fur of a Tibetan and/or Chow, and a bit of a GS face. SharPei is not visible at all. She’s long and wide but with short legs, like a Chow. She sounds peculiar but is really quite cute, and she knows it, and loves compliments!

It’s been crazy since we got her, and there are lots of ups and downs. I don’t think Abby is on the popular name list this year — I should’ve named her “Trouble.”

Here's my boy Canoe. A unique name, I would say. He's named after a character in Disney's That Darn Cat:

Maybe we should get insurance for our “herd” of cats (yeah, like we could afford it!) so the database would be filled with more names to choose from.

Lace, Chambers, Tasmin, Osbourne, Ferdinand, Chelsea, Guenwhyvar, Sapphire, Moreta, Damien, Alflafa, Buckwheat, Spanky, Stymie, Darla, Marmalade, Wheezer, Sheba, Sabrina, Avatar, Armand, Beelzebub, Lestat, Narvi, Valar, Jade, Murphy, Churchill, Ophelia, Gomez, Morticia, Chauncey, Lilith, Jool, Galahad, Cleo, Shanarra, Sasha, Tatiana, Piper, Celeborn, Toby, Thorn, Frodo, Morgan, Arwen, and Austin.
And that’s just the ones we have now! LOL!

Oh yeah, can’t leave out our bird, Radu.

"Dammit!" and "Jesus Christ!" didn't make the list.

Lots of names are unrepresented because normal people don't insure their pets; and judging by the male/female name ratio, most of those that do are wimmin.

I think there are thousands of commoners out there with names like s**thead, fleacondo, fuzzyface and NO!

Watka (aka Watkins), Tigris, Fuzzek, and Fuzzball.

And the late lamented Cattibal.

I can hardly wait to go home and tell my cat, Fat Mike.

we've always given our dogs "people" names: Spencer, Penni, Harper Lee, Truman Capote and Rico... they seem like people to us... and they think they're people...

It really isn’t as expensive to feed them as you’d think.

What hurts are the vet bills - - - shots, spays/neuters, ect. LOL! Fortunately, our veterinarian is good about giving us breaks wherever he can because he appreciates our taking in the strays that show up at the farm. These are cats who would otherwise have been taken to the pound, or who would have starved or died by other means.

We’re suckers for those furry faces, and fortunate we have the room for them and the means to care for them.
BUT, we hope people will STOP dumping their cats. It’s not that we have PLENTY already. It’s just so cruel to dump them in the first place.

They’re people in dog suits or cat suits.

He looks so much like our late great Tiki, who was 1/2 Siamese. She was white, with the same piercing blue eyes.

Lol. Not a chance. The word is probably out that you guys are the kind-hearted suckers. I'm the same way, though. We have four cats and if we come a across a stray I take it to the vet to get shots, spay/neuter, etc. Then we'll take it to the no-kill shelter that we volunteer at to get adopted out. That way it's no cost to the shelter.

Looks just like my dogs’ cat...’Chew Toy’.

Also my fat old lab ‘Oprah’ she’s a black b|+@h that won’t shut up.

I think I’ll take a road trip/tour of Chicago dog parks with ‘Oprah’.
