Top dog and cat names of 2008

Move over, Fluffy and Fido. There's a new batch of pet names in town: "people" names! Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's largest and oldest provider of pet health insurance, scoured its database of more than 466,000 insured pets to find the most popular dog and cat names of 2008. (Animals not insured by VPI were not included in the survey.)

But for those who like to think outside the (litter) box, VPI also came up with a list of unusual pet names, like Meatwad and Miss Fuzzbutt. The company's employees selected 50 unusual dog names and 50 unusual cat names, and then voted for the top 10 in each category. See which names were up to snuff.

I knew of a 3 legged dog who was named “Lucky”.

I guess it’s all relative.

We do not own a cat.

Our daughter moved to a place where she could not take her cat.

So, she gave my wife and me to him.

We are now humble wait-staff.

His name is Radar.

He let's us know when it is Noon and he needs his turkey breast deli meat. And at 5:55PM, without fail, he sits by the door and waits for my wife to come home from work, depending on traffic it is anywhere from 5:55 to 6:05, so he can tell her all about his day.

My wife's cousin, who lives next door, has a cat. Its name is Lexi.

I call it Exil.

Which is Dis-Lexi.

We used to have a cat named Kippers, but he disappeared this past August unfortunately :( My husband called him F-Cat because when I brought him home back in 2001, he said, “Oh no, not another effing cat.”

I had a stray walk (or get dumped) onto our property this summer and I began to call her Lady Thatcher.

We left for vacation before deciding what to do with the adolescent cat and 8 weeks later we greeted 6 freshly minted kittens.

We still call her Thatcher,...but she’s NO Lady.

"Dammit!" and "Jesus Christ!" didn't make the list.

What about "Stay" ... is it on the list?

Of all the cats we have, my favorite is named "Liz Beth Tailor".

We have another called "Niver", which is short for Conniver. Cat people will know.

Then too we have "Rabb" which is short for "Rabbit" as he is afraid of everything, and runs like a Rabbit to hide.

How 'bout another cat called "Keezee", which is short for "Skeezix".

There are plenty more of them. Fifteen total cats. Then there are the dogs, Horses, and the Donkey as well.

I know a guy who named his dog, “Stain.” You will have to think for a short time to figure out why the name was often obscene.
