Reporting from Sacramento -- That 52-inch, flat-screen television on the family room wall may have a terrific picture, but there's a big drawback: It's an energy hog.
State regulators are getting ready to curb the growing power gluttony of TV sets by drafting the nation's first rules requiring retailers to sell only the most energy-efficient models, starting in 2011. ______________________

What insanity.
After this goofy crap goes nationwide, when I’m in Mexico picking up medicine, I might have to buy a TV, LOL.
Sounds like even more business moving out of state. I wonder how much more energy it takes to drive a car across the state line and back home to a store selling a banned model?
Lot’s of Californians go to Nevada. Lot’s of shopping in Veagas. Just pick them up there.
Yep, who works for who has done gone and done a "to me come from me" and the wealth creators are the slaves of those who they pay.
Man! This is really going to upset the 0bama voters that are expecting their new TVs.
in Vegas also
What a total nutjob.
52 inch flat screens use 43 percent more electricity than a CRT? How big a CRT do you need to make this a true statement, 6 inch?
More lunacy from the Jayson Blair journalism school.
—yep—for some years , Laughlin dealerships could hardly keep SUV’s in stock—the kind without Commiefornia “pollution” control stuff—many of them heading west upon purchase.
Idiots mean plasma. IF they tack this on LCD flat screens, its pure lunacy. A giant LCD flat screen would consume far less power than a 6 inch CRT
Well I save a ton on heating bills now with that big 52 inch screen on it raises the bedroom temp 5 degrees so its a wash TRUE STORY
Anywhere there’s a heating season, these regulations won’t save as much as claimed. The electricity consumed is converted to useful heat. They might make sense where it’s hot all the time — but, not so in cold climates. Why not just let the market decide?
I hope this gets pushed through.
It will help phase out LCD TV and bring on the OLED televisions with their 1,000,000:1 contrast ration and 3mm thickness all that much quicker.

I wonder how soon the “authorities” will determine for us the size of home they will allow us to inhabit...
“You, there! You have too much square footage for your family’s size. For that gross violation of environmental law, this home is now the property of the government. You have 7 days to vacate.”
Big Brother is at it. George Orwell was just a few decades ahead of reality.
They are idiots, and they are including LCD as well as Plasma. They are saying that a large LCD uses more more electricity than a small CRT, so they are worse.
