Happy New Year 2009 from the Eastern Time Zone
2009-01-01

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o' lang syne ?

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
And surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot,
Sin auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !
And gie's a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
For auld lang syne.

That good old song of Wah-hoo-wah--we'll sing it o'er and o'er
It cheers our hearts and warms our blood to hear them shout and roar

We come from old Virginia, where all is bright and gay
Let's all join hands and give a yell for the dear old UVa.

Chant:
Wah-hoo-wah, wah-hoo-wah! Uni-v, Virginia!
Hoo-rah-ray, hoo-rah-ray, ray, ray--U-Va!

Today is my sweetie and my 16th wedding anniversary. Last night I worked a concert. At midnight I was was across the room from two bartenders and picked up the confetti off the floor, throwing it in the air and saying they should hug each other. On the screen I noted that Dick Clark looks like a muppet to me. I felt a bit lonely, then there he was. My husband was outside my door. He had sped there just to kiss me at midnight. After kissing me, he waited there until I was done with work. I was glad only one of my co-workers caught me in tears over that.

but I feel even worse, since the first thing I saw in the New Year was the Clintons hugging and dancing on live TV

Sometimes insomnia from the night before is a good thing.....I was sawing logs by 7:45pm, so didn't have the opportunity to endure that.

In my opinion, Dick Clark is not doing well in any shape, way, form or fashion. The decision to maintain him as a major presence on the NYE ABC show remains a bizarre, mysterious idea to me.

I watched him. Glad to see he's still alive and working. I say let him host it as long as he wants to.

Thank you devolve. I wish all good things for you in the new year.

Have been sick and company just left, but at least they cooked for me, lol.

Of course everyone’s glad to see he’s still alive. We’ll have to agree to disagree on his participation. He’s a professional entertainer. I’m sorry, but I consider his condition a big downer for NYE. I applaud his perseverence, and I’m sure his family is quite happy to have him participate on such a special night. But I’m not his family and I wonder why there’s no one around him willing to tell him the truth: a raised glass and quick wave would be more than enough.

[Later, a nice pork roast for dinner... ]

I had pork ribs, black eyed peas and cabbage - all considered good luck foods for the new year, lol.

Our good luck food is herring. It’s a family tradition passed down from my mom’s side. Don’t begin a new year without it! Both sides being German, I remember bowls of Sulze my mom made, and spickgans my uncle brought; all served on Pumpernickel bread. MMMmmmmmmm.

I love pork ribs, and cabbage, but I’ll pass on the black eyed peas, thank you very much.

Fish is not my favorite food and I’ve only eaten herring out of those tiny cans on crackers. Salty as I recall. Black eyed peas are not a favorite of mine either, New Year’s Day is the only time I eat them.

I only eat fish when we go out for Friday dinner, then it’s beer batter perch. Herring is reserved for New Year’s Eve. Herring is a little salty, and then there’s the pickled kind with is sour (due to the vinegar), or the one that comes in sour cream. We have both. Even the dog likes it.

I failed to mention the canned sardines my dad always ate. No, that wasn’t one I had a taste for.
