Dropping or raising some symbol on New Years Eve is a tradition around here and many other places. Following is a partial list of events scheduled for this year in the surrounding communities in Southcentral, PA.
Harrisburg will drop a strawberry. Nobody knows why.
Hummelstown will drop a Lollipop. Years ago there used to be a manufacturer in town.
Lebanon will drop a bologna. Lebanon is the home of Seltzers Lebanon Bologna.
Cleona will drop a pretzel. Shueys Pretzel company is one of the first in the US and they still make them.
York will drop a White Rose. York is known as the White Rose City.
Lancaster. Lancaster will drop a Red Rose. Lancaster is known as the Red Rose City.
Red Lion will drop, what else, a Lion.
Shippensburg will drop an Anchor. No one knows why.
Hershey will raise a Kiss. (They should raise a pinnate with a lot of jobs going to Mexico.)
Mechanicsburg will raise a Wrench.
Dillsburg will drop a Pickle.
Somewhere north of here they drop a sled (I forget where). That is where American Flyer sleds were made.
Hanover drops a Potato Chip. Utz Potato Chips are made there.
So, what does your community or surrounding communities do?
Austin is going to burn this clock...(Resolution Clock Tower)
“Austin is going to burn this clock...(Resolution Clock Tower)”
In San Antonio we usually have a fireworks night. However the Nazis decided that having fireworks will be a hazard because of dry conditions so they put a few hundred firework salesman out of work and then told them it was for the environment.
And people actually vote for these people.
We drop turkeys.
Now that is an ugly clock.
In Boston they college kids under the influence drop from rooftops while raising Caine as the legislature raise taxes and drops the boom on the taxpayers.
Your town sounds very much like my town.
Mobile, AL will drop a giant Moon Pie for the first time this year. My tax dollars at work.
Be polite. Don’t your politicians have names? We don’t call ours turkeys, we call them indicted.
Obligatory, Memphis drops a guitar.
"New York's Times Square has a crystal ball. Mobile will have it's Moon Pie. Now Pensacola is starting a new New Year's Eve tradition with the Pelican Drop.
A team of cabinet makers constructed the center piece of Pensacola's Downtown Countdown 2008. The 1,000 pound Pelican is 13-feet-tall and 17-feet wide and will be covered with 10,000 lights."
I guess you'd better watch out for Pelican droppings.
Girls in our town raise their tops.
< / wishful thinking>
(Was that a trick question?)
In Portland, OR they drop a stinky, birkenstock-wearing, bicycle-riding hippie lesbian into the river. The river is usually polluted with poo, so no additional environmental damage is done.
“The hell if I know. We’re usually dead asleep by 10 o’clock.”
Same here, we haven’t ventured out of the house on New Years eve in over 40 years.
Getting on the road is worse than a war zone!
In the Los Angeles area all the cops hide out under freeway overpasses to hide from falling bullets!
Dillsburg,Pa drops a dill pickle
Done on purpose, so everyone can feel good about burning it.
Southernmost City (Key West) celebrates New Year's Eve with a conch shell drop at Sloppy Joe's Bar, "wench" drop at Schooner Wharf Bar, and red high heel drop with drag queen Sushi at Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House.
Fresh Market in Mobile Alabama has it. My Dad’s Foster father was from Pennsylvania and got us hooked on it.
Mine too. :(
