“mentos into a bottle of warm coke” kind of explosive power... on a planetary scale.

Yup. Makes for a great science project for the kiddies, too.

“I hear they are looking for volunteers. Ready to sign up?”

Those would be the “green workers” promised by Obama.

” Put in some pressure-relief valves or something.”

Those already will be self created. They are called “Super Volcano's”. The next one, going by past history, is actually slightly over due.

Read up on the Siberian Trapps - that’ll scare the hell out of you... notwithstanding it was caused by a meteor impact on the opposite side of the planet...

Yeah, with Tia Leoni as an MSNBC reporter. And the President in the movie was black. Gulp.

“dropping global temps by a few degrees. “

Uh, hmm, in other words, an ice age?

I think Obama needs to go there and assess the situation and stay there until the problem is resolved......

You notice that he's conveniently "offshore" while this is going on.

Perhaps a few degrees for a short time. Certainly not long enough to cause an ice age. Massive volcanic eruptions only drop global temps for a year or so.

"At most, the ash and dust would have partially blocked sunlight for only a year or so, dropping global temps by a few degrees."

I know I'm an old man but I really don't remember.

What you say sounds more reasonable.

The cause of the Siberian Traps is far from certain. I think you are confusing them with the Deccan Traps of India. They, according to some scientists, *may* have been triggered by the K/T, 'dinosaur killer', asteroid impact on the opposite side of the world (Yucatan Peninsula).

Actually, I think the Siberian Traps were, or may have been, the result of a ‘Mantle Plume’.

Puzzled until they figure out a way to blame Global Warming, or Bush.

Nope - they found the remains of a giant crator under (mostly) the Ross ice shelf.

That doesn't mean the two events were related.

LOL uh, no. Right now its under tremendous pressure and just looking for a hole to come through. The minute it breaks its way to the surface it’ll vent with such violence we’d all be done for :)

The minute you hear that it happened head to the nearest grocery store and buy all the canned foods you can :)

I have seen enough about the super-caldera on the Discovery Channel to know we will be in for something that makes Krakatoa look like a pimple popping.
