930 AM PST SUN DEC 14 2008

...COLD AND STORMY WEATHER PATTERN FOR SOUTHWEST CALIFORNIA...

A DEEP LOW PRESSURE TROUGH PERSISTING OVER THE WEST WILL BRING A
SERIES OF WEATHER SYSTEMS INTO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FROM THE NORTH
THIS WEEK. THIS WILL CAUSE COOL WEATHER WITH PERIODS OF RAIN AND
MOUNTAIN SNOW. THERE WILL ALSO BE LOCAL STRONG GUSTY WINDS AT
TIMES...MAINLY IN THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS.

THERE WILL BE A FEW LIGHT SHOWERS TODAY. MORE SIGNIFICANT
PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TONIGHT AND MONDAY AS A WEATHER
SYSTEM MOVES THROUGH THE MAIN UPPER LOW. ANOTHER WEATHER SYSTEM
COULD BRING MORE PRECIPITATION TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. THERE
WILL BE PERIODS OF SHOWERS IN BETWEEN THESE DISTURBANCES.

PRELIMINARY RAINFALL ESTIMATES THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK RANGE
FROM ABOUT ONE TO TWO INCHES WEST OF THE MOUNTAINS...TWO TO FOUR
INCHES ON THE WEST FACING MOUNTAIN SLOPES AND A HALF INCH TO ONE
INCH IN THE DESERTS. HOWEVER...IN ANY OF THESE AREAS...LOCALLY
HEAVIER RAINFALL COULD OCCUR.

SNOW LEVELS WILL BE AROUND 4000 TO 5000 FEET BY MONDAY AND WILL
CONTINUE THROUGH THURSDAY...THOUGH IT COULD GET LOCALLY
LOWER...ESPECIALLY TUESDAY NIGHT OR WEDNESDAY. THERE COULD BE ONE TO
TWO FEET OF SNOW AT THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE SAN BERNARDINO AND
RIVERSIDE COUNTY MOUNTAINS WITH UP TO ONE FOOT IN THE HIGHER PARTS
OF THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY MOUNTAINS. SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW COULD FALL
ON THE PEAKS OF THE SANTA ANA MOUNTAINS. SNOW...BLOWING SNOW AND
DENSE FOG WITH NEAR ZERO VISIBILITIES AT TIMES AND MAKE TRAVEL
HAZARDOUS THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS DURING THIS PERIOD.

PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN WILL INCREASE THE FLASH FLOOD POTENTIAL.
RESIDENTS LIVING IN AND BELOW RECENTLY BURNED AREAS OR NEAR STEEP
TERRAIN SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR POSSIBLE FLASH FLOODING AND DEBRIS
FLOW. THE SHOWERS WILL ALSO MAKE ROADS SLICK. OTHERWISE...THE
PRECIPITATION WILL BENEFIT IRRIGATION NEEDS. PEOPLE PLANNING OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES SHOULD MONITOR THE LATEST WEATHER FORECASTS.

STRONG GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE FROM THE WEST OR
SOUTHWEST LATE TONIGHT AND CONTINUE THROUGH MONDAY. THE STRONGEST
WINDS ARE EXPECTED IN THE MOUNTAINS AND ON THE NORTH AND EAST SLOPES
AS WELL AS IN THE DESERTS. IN THE MOUNTAINS...THE WINDS COULD REACH
25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 65 MPH. IN THE DESERTS...WINDS COULD
REACH 20 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH AT TIMES.

WINDS THIS STRONG WILL PRESENT A HAZARD TO MOTORISTS...ESPECIALLY
FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES AND IN THOSE AREAS WITH LITTLE OR NO
PRECIPITATION...BLOWING SAND OR DUST COULD REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO
NEAR ZERO AT TIMES.

If its cold enough, they might be getting snow in Ensenada before San Diego. Projected with a low of 34 in Rancho Mirage tomorrow. Snow levels were at 1000 ft going into Yucca Valley last night.
