Ping!
I still use IE-6 when I have to use IE at all (like for videos as explained above). I will use it until MS no longer supports it with security updates. Problem with MS and most other software like Adobe PDF, Real Network, etc. is that it is BLOATWARE!! If you have a new computer, fast with hundreds of gigs of memory and a very fast high speed connection, you are probably o.k. (Vista requires all of the above). For us older XP users with slower DSL and limited hard drive space, its a pain to find something that is not overly bloated. Firefox is (was?) that way which is why I use it (plus features). But those days are probably numbered.
This file — with “2” or “3” — is in both FF2 and FF3. It grows as a result of having the phishing and counterfeit site protections turned on in options. In FF2 the file doesn’t get anywhere near as big.
Search on “IE Tab” and Firefox - it allows you to open an MSIE tab/window in FF or go to 970wfla.com select “Listen now” and follow the Help prompts to install it. It fools most sites into responding as if you’re running MSIE. ;-)
One reason I don't want a new pc is that I don't want Vista. Some of my older programs prob will not work with it and one for sure that I love. It's a MS raw file thumbnailer & viewer, addon I dl'ed and installed, talked to the guy on my photo forum who wrote it w/another guy. I browse my .CR2 files with it, love it, so handy. Yes, I can use other programs to browse but this one is the best.
FF will give me an exif reader for online like the one I have that goes on my IE menu.
When I first dl'ed IE7 and installed it, it totally messed up the newsgroups, the oddest way to access them, totally ruined that. Luckily Netscape works fine for that, there are still a few I like to read but some isp's are dropping usenet because it takes so much storage and network switching, etc.
So unless I can get a new computer with Win XP, I won't be a happy camper and would rather not have the expense now. But it would be stupid not to switch to Vista because eventually they'll quit supporting XP.
Oh, when I saw my newsgroups were messed up with IE7, somehow I figured out how to uninstall and go back to IE6, but I can't remember now and would just as soon get IE7 working again. The other annoying thing is that it says across the top of IE7 no matter what - AOL on the end, figured that came oem because I got 6 months free with aol but hate it so dropped it. Hmmm it's gone now. For how long, who knows?
I even poked around trying to find if I had other versions of IE installed the hard way, going through the prog files, etc., rather than using the shortcut on my desktop. No matter what I try, same problem.
I'll bet I don't use 1/3 of the features of XP or PS CS2, some it's good to have and some I'll never use.
Even if I do take it to the shop, I'm not real confident they'll do any better than I can by plodding along here. Sometimes they mess up as much as they fix but sometimes I gotta do it esp for hardware which I don't do myself unless it plugs in and you don't have to get in the tower.
I've been skating on thin ice with this thing for years now, but almost 7 years isn't too bad. This is my 2nd system. My first one was $5,000, company went belly up, 6 gb hd, my we've come a long way, but that was a lot of money for me and all I have left are my printer and Altec Lansing speakers with a nice sub woofer which I'd rather use than the cheaper things I have now but not sure where the drivers are and if it ain't broke, don't mess with it is my motto.
I think the FF3 Bookmarks organizer interface sucks too. The FF2 interface was much better. More like a file manager.
I’m running Firefox 2 and 3 both. I’ve had no problems with 3, but many of my favorite add-ons are not compatible with 3 as of now, so I’ll hang on to FF2 for a while.
If you can't kill an application at all, that is a problem of the operating system. The program itself may well have issues, but you should never have to restart for a userland application.
They still issue 2? I’ve been on 3 for months.
Agreed. And I liked the way the HISTORY function used to work. It’s a real pain now. I’m at 3.03
Firefox 3.0, which is currently at 3.0.4 and scheduled to update to 3.0.5 at the same time Mozilla ships the final Firefox 2.0 update, will continue to offer anti-phishing protection. Users of the older browser can update to the newer line by downloading Firefox 3.0, or accepting the automatic upgrade offer that will begin reaching them Thursday.Beltzner said that Mozilla won't offer any anti-phishing work-arounds for Firefox 2.0.0.19 users who want to keep using the older browser, but noted that there are similar tools available elsewhere. Alternatives to Firefox's built-in protection include the Netcraft Toolbar, WOT (Web of Trust) and FirePhish extensions, which can be downloaded from Mozilla's add-on site. [Note from poster: FirePhish is also outdated; read the reviews at the download site]
Really? I haven’t noticed a single change in the history function from v2 to v3. maybe we use it differently.
FireFox 3 works fine for me. It has only crashed on me once since it was released and I was able to restart it right back where it was about a minute later.
