Carbonite, online backup - how good is it?

Posted on 12/06/2008 6:59:24 PM PST by EveningStar

Has anyone tried the online computer backup system Carbonite? If so, what do you think of it?

Doesn't Rush advertise it on his show?

I’m VERY interested in the ReadyNAS PRO, but they just came out, so you can’t get them on Ebay yet except new ones. Then Netgear doesn’t really want to sell them diskless, so it costs almost as much to get a diskless one as a minimal configuration like (2) 500gb disks, so you might as well take it with the disks, take them out and use them for low end desktops, and put your own disks in the shell. But it’s still like $1600-1700 so it’ll really put a dent in the budget.

“Carbonite is the material used in the cryo-freezing process that Han Solo undergoes as a test of the equipment on a human before Darth Vader attempts to use it on Luke Skywalker. It has nothing to do with carbon paper. “

Wasn’t it also the make believe ultimate weapon stuff that Kirk used to bluff Balak before Balak turned out to be Ron Howard’s kid brother?

If you have valuable data on your computer that you can't replace, I guess you just have to bite the bullet and spend the money. The drobo doesn't come with any drives either, but I think you can get one for about $350. You can add drives as you need them or use an old one that is just sitting around to start out with (works with different sized drives). Good for non-techies.

You let other people have copies of your sensitive data and store it online where people can hack into it? {boggle}

Actually, if there were strong encryption [using some passwords and passkeys that were moderately long strings], and if you weren't storing anything which might attract the attention of the codebreakers at the NSA & their supercomputers, then you wouldn't have all that much to worry about.

So I guess the question would be: Does Carbonite offer encrypted backups?

That was Corbonite. And yes, I'm ashamed that I knew that without looking it up.

Oh so close...but no cigar. That substance was called "corbomite". Thus the name of the episode, "The Corbomite Manuever".

Yes, Rush advertises it on his show. He says he personally uses it. It might also be advertised on his website.
Yes, but I'm unsure of what he actually means. He endorses Carbonite, and he talks about using backup, but I'm not positive that he actually says that he uses Carbonite for backup. And the main reason I'm suspicious about that is that Rush uses Macs - and Rush himself said that Carbonite will make its service available to Mac users next year. I just hope that the service is dependable considering that people put so much personal data on their computer, and are potentially making it all available when using Carbonite.

Xerox

I love this term. Everyone says, "go XEROX me a copy of this please?" You never hear anyone say, "please 3M me a copy of this", or some other company. It has been and will always be, "Xerox" me a copy of this.

I don’t use it but you might want to explore his website. I also heard him say, it would be available for a MAC next year.

Carbonite is run by an extreme left winger. Do you really trust such a person with your computer’s content?
