I would like to hear if any freepers out there are Jeep aficionados, and if so, what esperiences they have had with customizing for capable off road use, while maintaing some reasonable on road (winter daily driver) demeanor.
I had a Comanche years ago, and did nothing with it, and have a Commander now, which is a real softie. My dream is an 08 or 09 WUR 4dr hard top with the 5.7L conversion from AEV.
What say you all?
Looks pretty hardcore, but personally I really don’t like the extended length 4-door.
One thing I don’t like about the Wrangler is its relatively tall stature, but short wheelbase.
I don't have a link to the lamps, but each is indivdually pointable which is kinda cool when the winter months hit. I point a couple at sharp angles away from the vehicle (to see the deer in my peripheral) and spread the remaining three across the front of my driving vision.
As well, I was told that if you want that "lift", but want the Jeep to stay road worthy, stay away from the seriously wide, meaty tires. The ones in that pic you posted look to be what I have as well. If you are going to add more accessories on, get a bigger battery and alternator. Outside that, will ping you when I have pics of my Jeep and what I do this spring to it...
One of my duties was to provide logistic support to my ham operators and I was allowed first pick for any surplus equipment. One day I was reviewing the United States Logistical Supply Catalogue looking for any surplus equipment and I came across a VHF radio that was being disposed of by the Navy. The FCC had just opened a new VHF radio band for ham operators. I ordered it and two weeks later it was delivered to my MARS radio shack. My radio operator called me and I drove to the radio shack. When I arrived I was found a wooden crate that stood 12 tall! The packing material stated that this VHF radio had been manufactured in 1945 for shipboard operations on a destroyer. It was armor plated and totally obsolete so I sent it to the scrap heap.
Several months later I found a listing for a Jeep mounted VHF radio. It was Korean War vintage and the radio measured 2 feet by 18 inches by 1 foot. This was no monster radio so I ordered it. Four weeks later I received a call supply that my radio had arrived. I said that I was going to send a pick up and the Supply Sergeant said that I might want to bring a fork lift. I asked why? The Sergeant said:Lt Mazza you might want to come down and see for yourself. I hurried over to the receiving department and there on loading dock was a crate that was 12 feet long six feet high and wide! The Sergeant was holding a crow bar and said, I want to see what you got this time! The crate had a front and Up markings stenciled on the crate. We opened the front of the container and sure enough there was a jeep! The VHF radio came with its Jeep attached. Well, this time I got the last laugh.
The container was delivered to the motor pool and one of my golf buddies the Assistant Motor Pool Officer did a quick evaluation. The vehicle had to be registered as an Air Force vehicle. It was Army green but it could be painted. It needed tires and some other parts but they were still active duty parts. Two weeks later I received a call that my Jeep was now ready. The radio was operational and I drove it around base with my head held high. My euphoria lasted less than a week. There were six Full Colonels on base and only four rated staff cars. My boss, the Base Commander, was one of the Colonels with a car! He called me into his office and asked me where I had gotten my Jeep. I explained my requisition faux pas and he laughed. Then his visage grew stern and he explained that there was a great bit of jealousy and that we need to get rid of the Jeep. The jeep was painted white and given to the golf course for maintenance duties.
Now THAT is a story that will live on for may years....
I would have paid money to see the look on your face....
Yup, I like to call myself a Jeep Girl even though I’ve never owned a Wrangler. I had a Liberty that was a *lot* of fun. We traded up for a Commander about two years ago. It is much less fun, but is cushie enough that the dogs don’t get carsick on long trips - and that makes it sooooo worth it.
I’d like to get the Hemi conversion too but I can’t justify that much cash.
I have 33” Goodyear Mud Terrain tires and a 4” lift on my 4dr JK. It was a slug on the highway till I put new 5.13 gears in it. And at highway speeds the Mud Terrains almost feel like regular tires. Now it runs like it should have from the factory.
Runs great on the highway and has more than enough room for wife, dogs and gear. And since I don’t plan on climbing huge rocks or driving thru mud that’s 4ft deep, it’s perfect for doing what I bought it for: going places off-road that I couldn’t normally get to.
Never owned one, but I’ve always been intrigued by the Wrangler.
I hear they’ve come out with a diesel version of some sort.(Not sure if its a Wrangler or not)
The officer's club was now a piano tuning school. The flight line was quiet and base housing was now low income housing.
I went to the golf course club house. The retired sgt who had been managing the golf course during my stay was still there. He recognized me and we caught up on happenings. The course was now expanded to 18 holes and that darn jeep was a god send. We walked out to the first tee and there was that wonderful jeep!
Really need a picture to go with that... totally priceless.

Hi all... since you’d responded to this Jeep thread earlier, I figured I’d run this by you all, seeking opinions.
I’ve always wanted a Jeep Wrangler.... or something I can take off road or more recently down along the Outer Banks.
Once my new contract is signed and confirmed, I’m going to trade in my 2 wheel drive pickup for a 4WD, and I hqve such an intense hankerin’ for a Jeep. So I’m seeking opinions... what do you think of them; what’s good, what’s bad (I hear mileage is terrible)... etc.
Or if you think I should consider a different $WD, what would you advise?
I thank you all in advance.
