If you have ever wondered what a greyhound and a Camel smoker have in common you can find out in todays edition.
I could not get a good copy of another sports article titled, 58,061 WATCH ROUT OF REDSKINS, 36-0. In that game the New York Football Giants won the Eastern Division title. That set up an NFL championship match between the Giants and Green Bay. The Cleveland-Pittsburgh game was to be played in Chattanooga according to last weeks paper. But they wound up playing in New Orleans. I wonder what the story behind that is.
See my reply #3. The Nazi plan was not a secret, even at this early date. Maybe the world was just not able to digest that the Nazis meant what they said.
From the story on the Cleveland Pittsburgh game: Byron ‘Whizzer’ White became a Supreme Court Justice and the father of Dallas QB Danny White. No, Homer, he was not nicknamed due to the ‘damned lack of public restrooms.’
The Nazi press, in 1938 or later, did not bluntly state that they were going to exterminate all Jews. It was always cleverly couched in terms of forced emigration, allowing for Jews and non-Jews to hope for something less than mass murder.
At least my Rams finished up with a W.
The Giants vs the Packers in the championship. Should be a good game.
For more than four decades, the area to which the Jews would have to move would be known as East Berlin.
After graduation he signed with the NFL's Pittsburgh Pirates (now Steelers), playing there during the 1938 season. He led the league in rushing his rookie season and became the game's highest-paid player. He took 1939 off to study at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, but returned to play for the Detroit Lions from 194041.
In three NFL seasons, he played in 33 games. He led the league in rushing yards in 1938 and 1940, and he was one of the first "big money" NFL players, making $15,000 a year. His career was cut short when he entered the United States Navy during World War II; after the war, he elected to attend law school rather than returning to football. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
So the "one-season career" in '38 was referring to his upcoming Rhodes Scholarship year at Oxford.
I did not know Whizzer was the father of Danny White.
I thought they meant this was his rookie, i.e. only, year in the league.
There's a reason for that: he's not....
Yeah, but the wording was so strange that I had to go look him up. He delayed his Rhodes scholarship for a year to play football, but was planning to do it the next year.
When you look at the guy's bio, and all the stuff he did ... really a remarkable man.

Most Jews were desparate to leave, but few countries would have them. Depending on whose numbers you trust, between 60% and 80% of German Jews left, but many of those were unable to leave the continent, so were swept up later. In 1933, only about a half million of Europe's Jews lived in Germany.
Yes, that's what I thought, but it turns out to be completely false, as Homer's article from November 27, 1938 clearly demonstrates:
Nazis in Final Phase of Their War on Jews
Note the following remarks:
"But for 700,000 Jews of Great Germany, it definitely means emigration as penniless refugees or EXTERMINATION WITH "FIRE AND SWORD." THEY THEMSELVES ARE THE FIRST TO REALIZE THIS, with all the TERROR such realization entails..."
"...But hope of even that much is gone, because frank statements IN THE NAZI PRESS, unless the democracies and Jews in the outside world are willing to finance the emigration of German Jews, they will be put into ghettos and deprived of all normal livelihood, and the remaining "rich Jews" will be kept to support the poor Jews until all the Jewish capital has been eaten up, or some desperate Jews have taken to crime, when ACCORDING TO THE SCHWARTZ KORPS, GERMAN JEWS WILL BE EXTERMINATED BY "FIRE AND SWORD."
Note the reference is to the Nazi organ "Schwartz Korps." Clearly, the Nazis warned the world EXACTLY what they planned to do!
So the real questions are: was anyone listening? Did anyone believe them? Maybe not...
Finally, in all this discussion, it's important to remember that by the time war started in September 1939, when Nazis sealed the borders, over 70% of Jews had escaped from both Germany and Austria. Those left behind were mostly elderly and poor.
And the real problem then turned out to be that most escapees did not run nearly far enough. When the Germans conquered their neighboring countries, those Jews were eventually rounded up and shipped away to be murdered.
Oh, my, let me answer my own questions!
The answer is yes, someone WAS listening and WAS doing his level best to help Jews escape. And that someone was? That's right:
Note chapter 6, the Rublee / Schlacht negotiations, showing that FDR was desperate to save Jews, but the Nazis didn't really care.
The same FDR administration which turned away the SS St. Louis? The same administration whose State Department purposely admitted fewer Jews than the immigration quotas allowed for? The same State Department who fired my godfather (and threatened to turn him over to the Vichy administration despite being an American citizen) for leaking news of the Holocaust in 1941?
Sure. Roosevelt talked a good game, but was very short on deeds.
