Last night, I hit a deer on a pitch dark road on the way home. Amazingly, the car was mostly unscathed and drivable and I could see the deer hit the road after it flew over the roof. The poor thing. Has any one has an accident like that? I think its an "act of god" type situation.
Several friends of our have been in that type of accident.
In both incidents, vehicles totaled, but they lived due to
safe vehicles.
The old school Crown Vic took two head-on big buck hits to kill it. The VW Dasher took a side-glancing hit, as did a Honda Civic. The Geo Metro was run off the road to avoid a a deer and ran into a guard rail.
The township has hired a company that hunts using bow and arrow to thin the herd. That's an on-going action. It has really helped a lot.
Good way to tenderize it.
My husband hit a deer about nine months ago. We did not have collision coverage on our car at the time due to its age (’97 Nissan Altima). Our insurance company totaled the car and cut us a check for the book value. We were very lucky!
"You people are idiots! Deer are over populated and killing people every year running on to the highways. I am sure you wouldnt be saying this crap if your wife or loved one was killed by hitting a deer in her car and the deer coming into the car and killing her. Wake up you bleeding heart liberals. You wouldnt be saying this crap if it happened to you or your loved one. My wife was killed just from driving down the highway and they are too stupid to stay the hell out of the way. Grow up!"
I hit a deer at 70 mph and my airbags DID deploy. I can still hear the shot in my ears, two years later. I was lucky too. My coffee cup just left my face not five seconds before the accident. I saw the airbag inflated for a longer time than I saw the deer. She wrapped around the front left corner of my Explorer, leaving a head dent on the hood, and her hoof or leg took out my left mirror, and dented my driver side door. Then, she got up and ran off into the field. I never found her. I cannot believe it. she had to have had broken her spine.
Only $1300 out of pocket for a local budding body work guy to practice on it.

Be glad you didn't hit a moose
Seriously, I was driving to town on the first day of deer season just after dark and an oncoming car put his high-beams on. I brighted him but he wouldn't take his off high beam. I figured "jerk" and kept going. Just after we passed this =psycho= deer leaps into the R front of my car from the left side of the road, essentially ramming my car.
Apparently it was on the left side of the road just at the location that our 2 cars passed each other and the effect of the oncoming vehicle's brights no longer shining at the deer seems to have caused it to bolt into the road (and my car) once the other car had passed it.
And that's how I was hit by a deer.
I’ve taken out two elk like that. The first one went right over the top, like your deer. Scared the crap out of him though because sh!t all the way over. The car was drivable but there was green elk crap in GREAT quantity front to back.
Oh...thank God you’re ok!
I had a near miss years ago in north Alabama when we lived there. I was driving a little bitty Chevette, this deer ran across the road so fast I didn’t even have time to take my foot off the accelerator. Luckily the deer was going so fast I must’ve missed it by an eigth of an inch! Scared the hell out of me! But one of my sisters lived in Colorado for a while, had a good friend of her’s hit a mule deer. This guy had a big truck, the mule deer’s back was even with the top of his hood. Totalled the truck, he wasn’t hurt but the mule deer was killed. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!
Jerky is the best use for road kill deer.
Waste not, want not.
And I make great jerky! ;^)
I was going 65 and the deer came out the late afternoon sun from the general direction of a fenced airport. I ducked behind the A-pillar for an instant and avoided the broken glass shards that covered the car’s interior. The wind coming into the car was strong so I slowed to 45 for the rest of the trip.
This is a another good reason to carry a weapon. You could save the animal needless suffering if you need to.
I had a deer rear-end my SUV. Scared the stuffing out of me. It was broad daylight and he just ran into the road and hit my rear right side. He fell down, but then jumped up and kept going. I was stunned. No damage to my SUV, just a clump of brown hair in the bumper.
My auntie hit a whole herd of them one snowy winter night. She came around a curve and as she says, “one went under, one went over and I don’t know where the the third one went.” Her Mercedes was totaled.
