You should see some of the "sob" stories our local rag prints this time of year.
Poor grannie, raising her daughter's six kids b/c daughter is in jail for drugs.
Poor this one, no money for a washing machine but a pack of smokes in the shirt pocket and everyone in the house overweight.
Poor etc.
Stories like that do the complete opposite of tug on my heart strings. If these are society's neediest cases that leads me to believe that things out there aren't so bad.

We could solve a lot of social problems by mandating a Depo Provera shot to collect welfare. One shot every 3 months, can’t get pregnant. No surgical required, any minimally trained tech can do it, and no abortion, either.
Welfare mothers shouldn’t be allowed to have more children once on welfare.
