Archaeologists are to examine a site near a medieval Herefordshire building before a new library is built.
The dig will take place near the Master's House in Ledbury before it is extended to house a new library.
Herefordshire Council said a viewing platform will be put up so people can observe the work taking place during the three-week dig from 5 January.
A medieval wall was uncovered at the site in June, which prompted the more detailed examination.
Kate Murray, assistant cultural services manager at the council, said: "I would like to apologise to motorists and traders for any inconvenience this work causes.
"But we have to fully investigate the archaeological remains before pressing ahead with the development of the new library."
Architects have been invited to apply for the tender of the library and the public will be able to comment on the proposed designs.
Hundreds of residents signed a petition calling for the Grade II-listed Master's House to be used for the new library.

Okay, but what color is the boathouse?
Dig those medieval libraries!!!
I wonder what the late fee would be on a book after all this time?
I am little confused. So is there an actually standing structure at the site or is it just parts and pieces, but mainly markings in the ground that show where the building was? Are they planning on using the structure? I am all for renovating old buildings and putting them back into use. Much better than turning them into museum pieces that will struggle for every on funding issues.
..............crazy man, crazy............
The headline had me coming in here thinking they’d found a treasure trove of Medieval era books. I was looking forward to discovering how many more colorful ways they had in describing just how awful the Danes were.
Not that I have anything against Danes. I’m sure some of them are actually nice folk. Well, except during Viking Season.
The enforcement guy’s name is Bookman...
The pic was of an existing structure (and there are others, it’s pretty neat) that is set for restoration, but the library was apparently nearby.
Any real chance that there might be a book or manuscript there, or is England just too damp?
