Using Black Friday Sales for Resale Profit (Vanity)
Craigslist ^ | 11-30-08 | Self

Posted on 11/30/2008 4:54:07 PM PST by Eagle Eye

We camped out with friends at Best Buy and bought a lot of laptops. We're selling them a little above the Black Friday price but below retail, good deal for everyone. We have 14 days to sell these, then we're taking them back to Best Buy for a refund. We have a receipt for everything so you can buy a warranty on them if you want. Type in the model number on the Best Buy site for all the specs. Prices are obo.

This bothers me.

On the one hand I appreciate someone taking initiative to make a profit.

On the other hand the guy is abusing the system for profit.

I hope he gets stuck with his load of computers that others stood in line for but couldn't buy because he had them.

Am I the only one who thinks this guy is cheating other shoppers and cheating on Best Buy even if it isn't illegal?

Buy low, sell high. If Best Buy didn’t limit customers to X numbers of computers, he’s not doing anything untowards. He’s practicing capitalism.

This is BS. There is no risk for these sellers. Best Buy should do something about their return policy to put the screws to such jerks. I agree with you.

Like I said, nothing illegal.

BUT...buying in bulk with the intent to resell or return cannot be what Best Buy had in mind.

And of course they don’t even intend to face the risk themselves, they want to return unsold units.

Legal but not ethical.

He’s practicing capitalism.

I disagree. He has purchased the product, but he intends to take it back. So he really has just borrowed something to see if he can sell it. However he is going to get his money back if he can not. He has no real risk. He exploits the system for his own benefit and let consumers and the store pay the price. He is a loser. Must be a liberal. At least a conservative has balls to take a risk with some principles and a strong sense of values.

I did forward the link to Best Buy so if they look at it they have the guy’s name, email, and telephone number.

My other Craigslist pet peeve are the listings that are merely two links from Ebay. If I want to shop ebay I’ll go to ebay.

That's fine as far as it goes, IF he takes the hit on unsold inventory and marks them down to get rid of the surplus. But he doesn't do that . . .

He’s practicing capitalism.
No, he's practicing Citicorp Socialism. Getting a refund on his unsold goods is like Citi making a bad business decision and then wanting somebody else to bail them out.

Two years ago I paid someone to wait on a line at the Metropolitan Opera for a pair of the $100 tickets they sell for $20 on the day of the performance. This performance was otherwise sold out. During the time the guy was waiting on line for me, I made approximately four times as much as the premium I paid to him. He was selling me his time, which I think is his to sell, and I was a willing purchaser. Only a liberal could think that either of us did something wrong.

Legal but not ethical.

Great way to put it.

If I was dating a guy and he did this I would dump him. If it was a friend I would speak with her and if she continued to do stuff like this I would move on. People that do this sort of thing while not illegal, are saying more about the type of person they are in the long term than any legality.

Speaking of capitalism, when my daughter was in high school she worked at a K-Mart. When they clearanced out their candy bars for 5 cents each, my daughter would buy them all and take them to school and sell them for $1.00 each. What does that add up to? 200% profit?? She learned capitalism early..She has done well for herself since high school.

Be that as it may, he didn’t make the rules in this situation. Best Buy would be wise to modify their return policies in their death throes.

Your sitation poses no ethical problems at all.

If you’d had him buy dozens with the intent to return unsold tickets.

Other people braved the lines to buy these products and someone couldn’t because he bought not intending to keep.

Legal but not ethical.

Good way to put it.

I'd have far more respect for someone who purchased tax-free cigarettes on an Indian reservation and re-sold them in a place with exorbitant tobacco taxes.

Now THAT is the American way!

So is there any limit to this kind of behavior?

If so, where?

Do you believe that Best Buy intended this to happen?

IMO, this is the kind of stuff that brings about rules, laws, limits, and such when people get selfish.

The only reason the guy didn't by dozens is that the Met restricts buyers of these "rush" tickets to two apiece. Are you suggesting that if he had only purchased two computers for resale that that would have been okay with you? And BTW, you can be sure that there were two people who didn't get to see/hear this performance because I did (along with my daughter).

Actually I would, too.

I have two real beefs about this.

One is that there were others who also stood in line and someone that might not have been able to buy; second is the idea of buying with the intention of returning.
