Geology Picture of the Week, Nov. 23-29, 2008: Nevado del Huila, Colombia; Recent Mudflow

Nevada del Huila erupted mildly a few days ago; but a mild eruption is enough to melt glaciers on the summit and trigger lahars, as happened tragically to Armero, Colombia in 1985. This time there were warnings and the warnings were heeded. Still a mess indicative of the powers of nature:

Nevado del Huila is just another Andean Peak reminiscent of Rainier, so there aren't a lot of pictures of it; the one below is pretty good.

TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Education; Outdoors; Science
KEYWORDS: evacuation; melting; mudflow; volcano
There was still loss of life, apparently, but not like the 23,000 casualites at Armero.

I see Rainier ever day and each time I think, “when are you going to pop”.

We do the same and wonder just how bad it could get!

Prayers for our friends and family in Colombia. Seems I've been saying this more and more as of late for reasons other than I'd want. : (
