Claws for ripping dandelions....
From another viewpoint...Defense?? Gives them the ability to climb trees without wearing those special shoes.
What can take down a bear?
Maybe half these species died out becuase of inbreeding?? Or "they killed their own" or only one of a litter of three survived...not enough to sustain a species.
Too many males...infighting...??

If cave bear = short faced bear, they were pure carnivores. Being omnivorous would have been an argument for the bears’ survival, since the leading theory for their extinction was the disappearance of herbivorous mega fauna.

Cave Bear and SHort faced bear were different species from different lineages. See Arctodus simus for Short Faced or Bulldog Bear. Very different animal and probably a lot more fightening than Cave bears.
