Doctors in Arizona thought a Phoenix-area woman had a possible brain tumor, but it turned out there was something else penetrating her brain – a worm.

Rosemary Alvarez started experiencing numbness in her arm and blurred vision. She went to the emergency room twice and had a cat scan, but everything came up clear, MyFOXPhoenix.com reported...

Doctors removed the worm and don't believe Alvarez will have any lingering health problems. No one knows exactly where she picked up the worm –- doctors said worms can come from eating undercooked pork or spread by people who don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom, according to the report....

Ick.

No word on what species of worm it was. That would go a long way to explain how it came to be living where they found it. My prime candidates are medium rare carnitas, restaurant workers who can't read or don't pay attention to those signs in the restrooms and of course the primary source of the (usually quite harmless) worms in most of our brains, tabby.

I recommend Carl Zimmer's book "Parasite Rex". You'll never look at your cat quite the same way again.

I know that there are some parasites which enter heart muscle and kill in Central America. I assume that there are nasty parasites which can enter brains, too. My husband was going to be asked to go somewhere in Central America for work and he did some research. He’s in agriculture, so he would be out fields, etc. He read about these critters and said “no, thank you. I’ll stay home.”
