Kemah Boardwalk partially reopens. The Boardwalk Bullet is up and running! Check it out!

One of Kemah's greatest assets is its location on Galveston Bay. The Bay and Kemah waterfront draw visitors to Kemah from throughout the world. Hurricane Ike’s storm surge caused roughly $450 million in damage to Kemah homes, businesses and city infrastructure, this does not include the Kemah Boardwalk or Marina. Many restaurants and business have already re-opened and the Boardwalk is opening a few restaurants at a time should be in full swing well before spring break "Better than ever"!

Back when I was an active boater in the area, it was called the Clay Pit. The pit was made by removal of clay for a brick factory up the bay.

Yes it has always, my lifetime any way, has been a sanctuary for the Galveston Bay boats... I have many memories and stories about the cove.

BTW, I cry when I see the development around it now...

This thread finally motivated me to call the Galveston Historical Foundation to find out that the Elissa has survived. I was very happy to find out that it did with relatively minor damage. I know there were a lot of irreplaceable historical sites in the Galveston Island area, but Elissa is one of my favorites.

Austinite (former Houstonian) here. I haven't been down there in a couple of years. I used to get all my goodies at Roses or Golden. I can remember YEARS ago when we would head down to the Dutchman and eat bugs and oysters. I think they were $4.95 for 2 pounds, and the oysters were $.25 ea. I hurt myself on food down there more than once. Also, that's where I learned to wash my hands before going #1 - especially after downing a few trays of spicy crawfish!

I was just saying that is is a very rough ride with lots of bouncing around. A person under 6’ tall might really enjoy it.

Had lunch at Landry’s on Labor Day, just four days before the hurricane. Nice restaurant.

I always liked Captain Henry's for fresh seafood still do. It has moved to the Kemah side and is open. The Dutchman upstairs was always my favorite. It is gone now and is an upscale sushi bar The Red Sushi on the Kemah Boardwalk. The Boardwalk's CHART HOUSE is one of my favorite now.

Elissa has survived but needs new sails. Saw her very soon after the storm.

We will be Cruising aboard the Carnival Conquest Dec. 7-14th. Many Cruisers stay in Kemah the week before or after the cruise. We are going to follow along with one such group. Watch for pictures.

When I come into town, I spend most of it on the west side. I found a great place on Westheimer, west of hwy 6. Oriental market with very good prices. One of my best friends used to live off Dixie Farm road, but has since moved to Montana, so I don’t get down south very often.

“Welcome aboard newbie!”

Thanks - my wife and I honeymooned on Galveston Island in ‘83. We went back in ‘04 and then again last May. We went to see the Elissa every time. It was a highlight for both of us. She passed away in September, and while she was in the hospital Ike devastated Galveston. I kept that bit of news from her. So I have very fond memories of Galveston area and especially the Elissa.

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a loved one cuts like a knife. It does not get better but you do learn to live again. I did. Lost a 4 year old '78, 26 year old '94 and my Ralph 2005!
Peace my friend.

I’m sorry to hear of your losses as well. Sounds like you have had the rougher time of it.

I hope the Galveston area is recovering - it was a a great place to go. Gaido’s was always a high point of our trips as well.

And the Old Quarter in Galveston has been rebuilding and should be reopened next month.
