Making Money During The Obama Years? (Vanity)

Okay, so we are looking at a few years of outright democrat control of the WH, Senate and House. The prospects for Americans is rather dour on the whole but there are ways to prosper and build "something" for the future. I fully expect people to jump on and complain about outright government confiscation of wealth and compensation and whatever else they need to say but there are other places to rant about that.

What I would like to start a discussion on is how people can make money for themselves, their families and the causes that they choose to donate to over the next few years.

Inflation is more than likely to appear in 2 years with the low interest rates and borrowing of money.

Carbon rules are likely to be implemented so expect costs to increase across the board.

More subsidies for alt. fuels is a pretty sure thing.

Oil is a wild card right now. Oil drilling is going to be on hold while prices fall. The democrats said that drilling would be on the table. Can we expect them to take it off? (Consider that gas prices are going to spike again. That alone could cost them a general election and "Hey man you smell" is pretty shrewd in amassing power. He put candidates up in 2006 that would never stand a chance in winning in liberal districts but they won in more conservative areas so the bottom line is he's about winning, not adherence to a pure liberal dogma.)

Bio fuels means more artificial demand which portends for higher prices and bubble creation. But, there is also derivative product potential that I was just clued into.

Involvement in the auto industry means that the domestic manufacturers are going to have to build cars that they wouldn't otherwise. The supply chain is going to be impacted in a major way.

So, with some of those thoughts in mind, can we talk about sectors, technologies, commodity markets or companies that might be worth looking at? The proviso is, of course, that this discussion is for informative purposes only. If you want to just rant then please go somewhere else. Don't ruin the discussion for other people might want to hear about opportunities.

While on the surface may seem Obama Administration friendly, the key component will be “how much black involvement in the enterprise”. This will be the principal gate to pass through. It’s called “gettin’ paid” in Obama’s community.

Any ideas on using other search engines? Google will become a big spy for the O Admin. I thought some ex-google left and started a new and better search engine.

The Internet will probably be used to spy on us. I am probably telling Direct TV bye bye. When Fox News and the rest are Obama propaganda arms - the less TV I see the better.

We need a Obama business blacklist. ABC News is owned by Disney. ABC actually ran a report with Brian Ross that was critical of O recently. How do we get ABC to not be a stooge for O? Fox News sold us out.

Mobile home parks. All the benefits of rental properties without the drawbacks. First, real estate prices are low, so it's a good time to invest. You have an asset with a good chance of future appreciation, that also provides cash flow now, which will increase over time as you raise rents a few percent each year. Very few tenants are going to move because of a 3-5% rent hike. Even when people move, they usually just sell the mobile home, so it doesn't matter to you. Unlike traditional rental properties, you don't have to paint, replace carpets, fix plumbing and appliances, etc. Those all belong to the owner of the mobile homes. You only need to worry about the common areas, buildings, sewer lines, etc. Also, since people own their units, and mobile homes really aren't all that mobile, turnover and vacancy rates are much lower than traditional rentals. You can buy one mobile home, and someone to manage the park in for a place to live, which means you don't have to put any of your time into it.

It seems that if you’re a slum-lord, you could be in for some very lucrative contracts, if you know Obama...

I think a more conservative play is ETFs for commodity funds that offer a balance of metals, oils, agro, etc. You want something with a low sales charge.

I am still maintaining a larger cash position but have started buying for a 25 year horizon as well. With the indexes down 35-40% it's good value.

Edit: You can buy one mobile home, and get someone to manage the park for you in exchange for a place to live, which means you don’t have to put any of your time into it.

With the global economy still in freefall the commodities and emerging markets are probably not going to prosper again for some time. The usual harbinger of a general recovery is the chemicals sector so if that's your intent I would keep an eye on them. Watch Dupont, Praxair, etc.

Alternative energy will get a boost but it will remain sspeculative--look at the charts for FSLR SPWR ENER and others. They may recover sooner than most if the congress passes the expected subsidization of their industries. The counter to that though is that with the soft economy demand for energy over all will remain slow to grow.

I like apartment REITs if they have subsidized units in the portfolio. Guaranteed cash flow and occupancy plus they get capital improvement dollars every few years. Otherwise look for companies without a lot of crap in their portfolio. More maintenance costs and turnover.

If you’re a small business owner consider bartering. If you primarily provide a product you may want to look for another’s product offerings, but also don’t forget service oriented businesses and what value they bring to the table. This will serve to conserve cash and facilitate inventory turnover(esp hard to move items due to $$$ in a cash poor economy).

I am looking at selling T-Shirts, Sweat Shirts, Posters and Bling with adoring messianic 0bamba quotes and images to moonbats!

Great idea, only put subliminal negative imagery in them. Every little bit helps, and they will pay to wear it!

If you use cash for some of your basic purchases now, then there should be no difference in the profile if you spend cash income in the future.

I asked my advisor to dig up any reports on what investments were profitable during the Carter years.

I’ll ping back here when I get some info.

I am looking to buy commodities long. The logic is that inflation will be reappearing in 2 years, bio fuels will create more demand and once the run starts the funds explode. I’d rather be investing regularly into those areas over 12-18 months and then have some position when it turns up.

Specialty chem is a mixed bag and depending on what sectors they rely on. If they are electronics heavy then expect nothing. If they are into healthcare and derivative products then I would think they would do better.

I am trading advertising and opening channels for selling my products (content) as well as getting stuff donated in terms of articles in exchange for promotion.

We will have an affiliate marketing program operational in a few weeks and I am actively looking to version off the stuff we create for new markets.
