The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

I’m sure Cuba, China, North Korea and Venezuela offer models of how to educate youth in new ways of progressive thinking, and how to keep citizens productively engaged and away from idle time in public gatherings

Hmmmm....since they are all volunteers, they will need some structure, an organizer. The organizer will be severly put upon so, they should be paid. Grants from the government should do the trick.
Now, since we Democrats hold government power, then it seems only right that our constituency get the paid jobs.

Yeah, and who isn’t going to serve? The dropouts and drifters and untraceable people. Those of us who are reliable and traceable will be called upon to serve some of these same people.
Probably not, but that raises another concern.
When I first read this, I thought, you know, it wouldn't hurt to have everyone spend a week at the local mission feeding the homeless. It could make us thankful for what we have and be a motivator.
However, instead of serving at the local Christian mission that meets both physcial and spiritual needs, they would route the effort to some secular outfit that only meets physical needs. And in the process actually hurt the Christian ministry. It'd be just like United Way. All Secular all the time.
Hey, Boy Scout Master wouldn't work, but I bet you could serve your time for Planned Parenthood encouraging abortions or filling out voter registration cards from the phone book for ACORN.
