Let's look at Palin's White House chances by examining the results of those who sought the Vice Presidency and lost.

This does not included those who were Vice President and lost at re-election

1904: Sen Henry Gassaway Davis - WV, Dem, Never heard from again

1908: Sen John Worth Kern - IN, Dem - Died 9 years latter

1912: Gov Hiram Warren Johnson - CA, Progessive - Elected to the US Senate until 1945

1916: Sen Charles Warren Fairbanks - IN, Republican - Died in 1918.

1920: Gov Franklin D Roosevelt - NY, Democrat - Elected President 1932

1924: Gov Charles Wayland Bryan - NE, Democrat - Return to Lincoln

1928: Sen Joseph Taylor Robinson - AR, Democrat - Return to Senate

1936: Frank Knox - MA, Republican - Became FDR's Navy Secretary

1940: Sen Charles Linza McNary - OR, Republican - Returned to Senate

1944: Gov John William Bricker - OH, Republican - Became a US Senator.

1948: Gov Earl Warren - CA, Republican - Return to Sacramento, the rest is history (didn't do enough to redistribute income).

Gov Fielding Wright - MS, Dixicrat - Returned to Jackson.

1952: Sen John Sparkman - AL, Democrat - Returned to the US Senate

1956: Sen Estes Kefauver - TN, Democrat - Returned to the US Senate

1960: Amb Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr.- MA, Republican - Returned to Diplomatic corp.

1964: William Miller - NY, Republican - Disappeared. Claim to fame, made an American Express commercial and spawned a she-bitch by the name of Stephanie Miller.

1968: Sen Ed Muskie - ME, Democratic - Ran for President in 1972, degraded himself further by becoming Carter's Sec of State in 1980.

Curtis Lemay - CA, American Independent Party - Disappeared.

1972: Sargent Shriver - Md, Democrat - Ran for President in 1976.

1976: Sen Robert Dole - KS, Republican - Returned to Senate, Ran for President in 1980, 1988, and got the GOP nomination in 1996 only to make McCain's run in 2008 look good.

1984: Rep Geraldine Ferraro - NY, Democrat - Left the House,

1988: Sen Lloyd Benten - TX, Democrat - Returned to Senate, later degraded himself in the Clinton Administration.

1992: Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale - MD, Reform Party - "Who am I? Why am I here?" Made the word Gridlock famous.

1996: Jack Kemp - NY, Republican - Private citizen, frequent media guest.

2000: Sen Joe Liberman - CN, Democrat - Returned to Senate.

2004: John Edwards - NC, Democrat - Returned to North Carolina, ran for President in 2007. Cheated on his wife.

Exactly! You are so right about Sarah and the energy she brought to the ticket. Without her, McCain would have gotten totally blown out. If he had let her be Sarah from the beginning, he might have picked up a few more states.

Actually if McCain would have gone after Obama from the beginning he would have done a better job. I wonder if McCain is who had Sarah quit using the word socialist against Obama.

Sarah did a much better job and wish she had debated Obama in the first two debates.

FDR is the lone losing VP candidate to buck the trend, as he made a comeback in 1932 (12 years later) and was elected President.

Sarah Palin has a long political future ahead of her. In 2020, she'll only be 56. She could possibly follow FDR's example, just as GHWB was the first sitting Vice President to be elected President since 1832 (Bush's victory occurred in 1988, 156 years after Martin Van Buren had done the same). She might even pull it off in 2012, if Obama becomes so politically toxic he's doomed in four years.

So while it's unlikely, never say never. I would argue that unlike recent losing VP nominees being a drag on the ticket (Edwards failed to even reducing the Dem's losing margin in his home state, LIEberman turned off alot of Democrats, etc.), Palin was a net positive for the ticket. Her home state candidates (Sen. Ted Stevens and Congressman Don Young) being saved from almost certain political extinction with her running atop the ticket is proof of that.

Her chances are slim since apparently some republicans are already trying to undercut her reputation.

She's got two chances mouth piece for oil drilling in Alaska and get the public behind her. Or Stevens resigns and she goes to DC and gets something done.

Truman had been in the Senate for ten years before becoming the VP. He had also served as a judge. Hardly a simple Nordy’s salesperson.

Yes, but he didn’t have a college degree. In fact, he was rejected by West point.

The point is a piece a paper does it make you qualified. It’s content of your character. John Bolton says she’s okay, and I believe him.

Let's make SARAH PALIN the RNC Chair.

And what of Ronald Reagan, who ran for the Presidency and lost?

Rejected for poor eyesight.

Don't you at least want a president smarter than yourself?

He ran for the nomination in 1976 and lost. However, when nominated he won.

You would also see a lot of young girls and women at Sarah's rallies also.I think she inspired a lot of young women and young male voters also and they won't forget her in 4 or 8 years when they reach voting age.

Agreed with other posters young Republican spirit and savvy is definitely needed on our side.

Just because someone is a career lawyer and sits in the Senate 30 yrs doesn't neccessarily merit themselves Presidential material.A fresh outlook is most definately needed.

It seems it is the Harvard educated class that seem to screw people out of their money and get their sons killed.

Jimmy Carter was a nuclear engineer who graduated from the naval academy.

The problem with this country is that we lack leaders with common sense.

I am an engineer, there aren’t any politicians in Washington who are smarter than me.

I am absolutely ill over the treatment Gov. Palin has received. I remember reading about her for the first time probably a year and a half (or so) ago. Her ideology is mine (pro-life, pro 2nd Amendment, fiscal conservative)...her life (well, family mirrors my own). I emailed magazine articles about her to my daughter, to my friends (the political ones at least). And there were just a couple of us 'here' who even knew who she was and discussed and promoted her early on. WE WERE RIGHT!!! She was perfect...too perfect for the cretins of the RNC...

Now, from back when the snide remarks were(Alaska?, didn't she just have a baby? she went where to College?) to now that she (and of her wardrobe) are being made scapegoats for the entire future of the free world, I can see the hands of the 'country club' RNC.

Perdogg...did you hear Carl Cameron's breathless reports on the backstabbbing from the McCain staff? He actually uttered the phrase 'Wasilla Hillbillies' as a quote from a staffer. I thought I was going to throw up.

Yes...we were part of the small cabal that 'knew' she would be right...and she is. Now, we have to (channelling my inner Biden) 'gird our loins' and clean up the mess the McCain staff is making. Time to clean house...and get all mavericky ourselves. And have you noticed who the White Wine spritzer (well the ones who can drink) crowd is now setting their sights on? Why Bobby Jindal. Gotta 'destroy' another conservative Governor...to keep the path clean for the RINOs next turn.

It makes me sick too. She needs to come out and make some policy statements on Foreign Policy like Reagan used to do.

Did you not get the memos? You are never, ever, permitted to speak, whisper, utter, type, handwrite, draw, read, think or even permit your dreams to be sullied by the middle name of the Chosen One.

And I wish I was able to add a sarcasm tag...

30 years in the Senate? That's an accomplishment? What legislation has Biden produced? Hasn't he been on the 'wrong' side of just about every major issue in the past 30 years? But using your logis...30 years give him gravitas to be Veep. Ok....

then explain what 143 days in the Senate qualifies you for?

Running for the nomination is part of running for President, as FRed Thompson could tell you.

Palin did not "run" for her spot on the ticket.

Kyrie Eleison!

Somewhere in our history, lawyer became segway to politician. Why? During one of my discussions w/a friend who is an 0bama zealot (but who didn’t like Palin)...she pointed out that ‘Columbia and Harvard are Presidential...University of Idaho...no.’ When I asked why only Ivy league could rule/lead she said ‘because that is the its supposed to be.’ I ask ‘why’ and well...I was pushing her buttons because she could not elaborate why there is a chosen class...in our Democracy. I think ‘a fresh outlook’ is an outstanding way to spread the (wealth) of power around.
