Creationists declare war over the brain
New Scientist ^ | 22 October 2008 | Amanda Gefter

Posted on 10/22/2008 3:18:08 PM PDT by Soliton

"YOU cannot overestimate," thundered psychiatrist Jeffrey Schwartz, "how threatened the scientific establishment is by the fact that it now looks like the materialist paradigm is genuinely breaking down. You're gonna hear a lot in the next calendar year about... how Darwin's explanation of how human intelligence arose is the only scientific way of doing it... I'm asking us as a world community to go out there and tell the scientific establishment, enough is enough! Materialism needs to start fading away and non-materialist causation needs to be understood as part of natural reality."

His enthusiasm was met with much applause from the audience gathered at the UN's east Manhattan conference hall on 11 September for an international symposium called Beyond the Mind-Body Problem: New Paradigms in the Science of Consciousness. Earlier Mario Beauregard, a researcher in neuroscience at the University of Montreal, Canada, and co-author of The Spiritual Brain: A neuroscientist's case for the existence of the soul, told the audience that the "battle" between "maverick" scientists like himself and those who "believe the mind is what the brain does" is a "cultural war".

The soul weighs twice that of fluvium, but less than ill humors.

Ill Humors! Such old theories. It has been categorically proven that illness is caused by a small dwarf living in your stomach. I thought everyone knew that. (Thanks Theodoric)

More “hippocampus minor” idiocy?

“It is not I who seek to base man's dignity upon his great toe, or insinuate that all is lost if an ape has a hippocampus minor. On the contrary, I have done my best to sweep away this vanity.” Huxley

What makes a man after the likeness of God is not in our anatomy or our DNA, it is in the Immortal soul given to us by an Immortal God.

Don’t exhibit the sort of arrogant ignorance folks usually accuse creationists of exhibiting.

The problem of consciousness is a major philosophical problem that, thanks to advances in neuroscience (and to a lesser extent the odd role of the observer in quantum physics) now impinges very directly on a number of scientific disciplines.

Why any subjective experiences exist, and how they actually correlate with brain function, is a serious issue. Why aren’t we all zombies in the philosophical sense? Is strong AI true? If so, there is no plausible Darwinian explanation for the trait of consciousness, since a zombie with the same computational capacity would be just as adaptively fit. If not, then materialism has different problems.

Why did we inherit an organ (the brain) that we cannot and do not fully use?

Further, the function of this organ has had little evolution for the last 40,000 years. What was the need for this incredible organ then?

Did we need Da Vinci to sharpen spears?

Is it possible that evolutionary development of the brain occurred gradually over time until consciousness began? And natural selection became irrelevant?

That's a huge waste of time and energy. Both sides have a very primitive view of mind and an even more primitive view of how to examine mind.

What a joke!

Somebody's been reading the Wedge Strategy--and believing that drivel!

I think this is in reality

Which reality? The empirically proven one or the one that just feels right?

The “we only use 20% of our brain” factoid is just made up nonsense.

We (or at least some of us) fully use all of our brain. If someone tells you they can “unlock” the “unused” part of your brain; it is far more likely they want to “unlock” the “unused” part of your bank account.
