I'll at least start a WS Game 1 thread (anyone got a ping list, ping it here). Rays-Phillies at Tampa. btw, had the Red Sox won on Sunday night, tonight's game 1 would have been at Fenway park; weather.com predicts lows in the 30s tonight in Boston (what could have been...) Instead, More Cowbell in St. Petersburg. Inside.
Philadelphia 92-70 (Road: 44-37) 8:35pm ET Tampa Bay 97-65 (Home: 57-24) TV: FOX PHI: C. Hamels (0-0, NA) TB: S. Kazmir (0-0, NA)
Is the first game in Boston or Philly?
:O)
should be a great series
Both teams know how to hit the ball
Advantage : Phillies
(1) more experience in the big games, more veteran players
(2) better closer (Lidge is 48-0 this year)
Of course, I am biased but I think this is a good analysis
bottom line : whoever gets more runs wins ! : )
It’s insane to start these games at 8:35PM on a school night.
How is THE GAME going to draw interest from youngsters when they...like most starting pitchers....have to be ‘yanked’ after the 5th inning??
GO SOX!
Oh, wait, never mind.
Seriously, is there really any audience for this series?
If I had to choose (as a Sox fan) I’d root for the Rays, they were impressive the last 2 years, and putting the Yankme’s into 3rd place was really cool. Never thought I’d see that in my lifetime.
baseball fans
I will be happy no matter which team wins: there are no teams from Boston, Chicago, LA, NY in it. THAT is change you can beleive in!
Beautiful weather here today...low 80’s I’d say, maybe some rain tomorrow, but the game’s inside, so who cares about a little rain.
The Sox and Yankees fans have been supporting Tampa for years through Selig’s Obama-like plan of spreading the wealth from the haves to have nots.
I was all ready to root for the Rays till those players showed up at the Obama rally. NOw not even sure I’ll watch the series.
Games end so late that sometimes you don’t get (complete) coverage in papers; in Boston, the Herald is actually printed about 90
miles away in Chicopee these days so for many editions,
the next day’s paper’s coverage will be basically stories
written before the game, AND “...Sox lead 2-1 in 4th...”
We know games 1, 2, 6 and 7 are in a dome down in Fla.
(6 & 7 if necc.) Games 3, 4, and 5 (if nec.) are in Philly.
Acc to weather.com:
Sat, rain predicted high 66 low 50
Sun, partly cloudy high 61, low 50
Mon, chance showers high 60, low 38
bundle up in Philly if it gets a bit nippy
Got that right.

Sportscaster: And here comes Mom out to the sofa. She
has little Danny hand over the remote to her...and it looks like Danny is heading to the bedroom...maybe he can catch a bit more of the game on his radio, but Mom and Dad are
both insisting he needs his sleep...
I do remember staying up to see the Fisk HR in game 6 of
the ‘75 world series. I woulda been about 13 and a half
at the time. 12:30 am or something?
What pisses me off is the fact that some of the welfare recipient owners pocketed the cash instead of putting it into payrolll and player development. If the owners are going to put out a bad product then why should the fans come to the park? And, looking back on the Rays series, you know most of those fans were bandwagon jumpers. If they were to have show up every night ove the past few years team would have had more money to spend.
There are plenty of a-hole Sox, Yankee, Cub and Philly fans but they follow their teams through thick and thin.
I can verify that. I became close to one of the Ripken family members here in Maryland (through Little League Baseball) when Cal was still an active player. He relayed to me that Peter Angelos was taking multiples of eight figures in income out of the franchise, mostly from MLB corporate welfare payments.
The cowbell almost made those games unbearable to watch for me.
I was hoping some network guy would wack the dude(s) with a bat to shut him up.
Phils in 5!
True story: In Oct. 1980, I was a 14 year old high school freshman living in the Philadelphia area. The day before Game 6 (Phils v. Royals), my graphic arts teacher (friends with John Vukovich) tells me he couldn’t use his ticket BEHIND THE BACKSTOP, and offers it to me, FREE!! Of course, my parents being non-indulgent and responsible, would not permit me to go to the game alone, so I didn’t go. The Phils won the 1980 World Series in Game 6 at the Vet.
Now, fast-forward 28 years. I’m a grown man, have my own kids, and I’m fully appreciative of my parents’ concern in 1980. I may have the opportunity (long shot) to go to the game on Monday 10/27!!!
That’s why I NEED the Phils in 5...28 years is a long time, especially for someone who coulda’ been there!!!
