Five police officers have been arrested in the deaths of four villagers during a raid against protesters who had seized the entrance of a Mayan archaeological site.
The Chiapas state Justice Department says the five officers headed the operation to remove hundreds of mostly indigenous villagers who had occupied the entrance of the Chinkultic ruins for nearly a month.
The villagers were protesting excessive entrance fees and a lack of investment in the area. They were demanding a role in the administration of the ruins.
The protesters fought police with sticks, rocks and machetes. The Justice Department says four villagers were killed and two were missing. Indigenous leaders say the six protesters were killed.

Considering where this occurred, what are they supposed to invest in? Rocks? Those people, with the coaching of Comandante Marcos, are using the word “invest,” like the Democrats, when what they really mean is “gimme.” Don’t get me wrong, the Mexican mainline culture has treated the indigenous Maya very badly, but by clinging to their ancestral ways and refusing to learn Spanish, and taking up with the communist Zapatistas, they have managed to make a bad situation worse.
Note to self: ALWAYS bring an attorney and a gun to a machete fight.
