Really people over think stuff. You hold the door open for everybody, men or women. That’s just polite.
I make the effort to hold doors open for women and seniors, and no one has told me, “I can get it myself,” but I’m not spending any time on college campuses, either.
If it should happen, I’ll ignore the comment and hope that the ungrateful, man-hating lesbian gets burning coals heaped on her head, a la Romans 12:20. :-)
this matter may seem trivial to most but having lived most my life in the city & worked in the ghetto my entire adult life.
it is an absolute pleasure to open the door for the man or female & say “good morning”
much more refreshing than in the ghetto when ya get dirty looks or the person IFO u let’s the door close on your face.

Exactly. I hold the door for anyone who's in the area, or I delegate a child to hold it. The hard part is getting the child to move along instead of being a permanent doorholder, because people have so much praise for an 8-year-old standing there holding the door :-).
agreed! it's called courtesy. it's apparently, for many, something that is an outdated tradition.

My son gets to be the postoffice doorholder regularly.
I always get the door. 99.9% of the time I get smiles and thank you’s. Then again, I’m in TX.
I just say, “Door!” and somebody opens it. However, we have to drill on, “Open the door, and then stand *behind* it holding it open.” People can’t walk through the door if the kid’s in the way!
I remember a snowy day in college, 1980 or so, when I held the door open for whoever was behind me.
And suddenly there’s this angry: “What’s this, do you want to keep me barefoot and pregnant ??”
The resultant heat could have melted snow over half the campus. It was one of the campus fixtures, a tall, thin woman with butt-length hair, coke-bottle glasses, and a barely disguised hatred of all things male.
I turned, looked at her, and said:
“Hmm. Well, it’s too cold for bare feet, and as for pregnant, that would require sex. And I have a basic rule when it comes to sex: only with humans. . . “.
I then turned and strolled merrily away. . .
Then you've just settled the question of which one of you has manners.
There is a chain of convenience stores with the name of Wawa [after a kind of goose].
They serve about fifteen different kinds of coffee, and stopping in for one on the way to work is almost more than a ritual for most folks.
People will practically run each other down in the parking lot to get a space, and shortly therafter almost get into arguments over who shall hold the door open for whom.
Funny people, these Northerners.
Gosh this is a tired old subject. I have never heard a woman complain about being insulted because someone held a door for her. Is this really a problem? Sure there will always be the nut who spouts off but that can be either sex in any circumstance.
