I've been hogging our Netflix (history, documentary, military genres) and realize the wife and kids need some levity.
Would you all take the time and give me an opinion of what you consider to be the best funny movies you've seen. I'm talking from the silent era of Charlie Chaplin up to the most present ala American Carol.
It doesn't matter if it's dark humor to vulgar humor to Walt Disney. Thanks for your input!

I liked Old School and Elf. Generally I don’t enjoy the films as much as the hype suggests I should.
I like James Cagney in Blonde Crazy (a grifter comedy from the 1930s). Pre-code hollywood with the sinning they would later have to cut. I see where Warner Bros. got the wiseguy character for Bugs Bunny.
How about some comedies from people not so noted for the form?

After Hours (Scorcese)
and unrelated to the above list, Amazon Women On The Moon.
Red Skelton’s The Fuller Brush Man and many more of his movies.
All Abbot and Costello movies.

I caught part of “Tarzoon” years ago. Brian Doyle-Murray, Christopher Guest, Bill Murray and John Belushi were also part of the cast.
Which reminds me of Christopher Guests’ films like:

You'll have to watch The President's Analyst to find out (and yes, that is another recommended comedy, it's actually pretty biting even today). A smarter version of what Mike Meyers was swiping for Austin Powers.

And for others, I have seen many of the others (from cable in the 1980s). I agree with the Mel Brooks films and others that have been listed, my “silence” wasn’t because I didn’t want to bump the films along, but where do I “stop”? So I let my mind wander as I read this and tried to think of some other films to suggest.
From Parker and Stone
‘Orgazmo’ It’s about a mormon missionary that gets a part in a porn film to pay for his wedding in the temple in Salt Lake City. The old lady telling them off at the beginning is worth the price of admission. Also if you speak Spanish listen to the lyrics the ‘Naked Mariachis’ are singing...something about an ‘ugly sister’.
‘Team America World Police’ Not as funny as Orgazmo but still worth the watch.
and of course ‘South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut’

‘Quills’ had me falling down laughing. I’m a sick puppy.
All the Python. All of it.
All the Marx Brothers except ‘Night at the Opera’ (can’t stand the caterwalling.)
Anything with WC Fields in it.
‘Clockwork Orange’ had it’s moments. Like I said I’m a sick puppy.
Anything made by Mel Brookes.
Any John Waters film that Has Devine in it. I know this is a conservative sight, but those two pufftas made funny movies. John Waters without Devine is just awful and unfunny pervert preaching. Avoid like the plague.
American Psycho. Awesome. ‘Huey Lewis and the News’ will make you smile after watching that movie.
Fight Club.
Electric Apricot: Quest for Festaroo. I love it when the bartender tells the hippies off ‘My parents listened to all that #@%% and did the dances (waves arms like a hippie ‘dancing’) and everything. About the time I turned eight I realized that my parents were just stoned and their music sucked...It all died when Jerry died and I’m glad.’
American Zombie. A documentary about ‘high-functioning zombies’ and their quest to be accepted in society. Mocks libs who want to accept everything as normal.
For me A&C were a million percent funnier before Costello’s child died. After that he was just going through the motions, the joy was gone. None of the A&C “meet” movies compare to their first six or eight. I introduced my five year old to them and by now (he’s seven) he knows them by heart...they just don’t get tired.
Rat Race
The radar tower scene, the cow pasture scene, and many more.
